Kim Richards, star of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” drank “two inches” of vodka before getting behind the wheel of her car in the hours preceding her April 16 arrest. Kim’s drinking binge was triggered by the depression she felt over her broken relationship with her sister Kyle Richards.
Richards appeared on the April 28 episode of the Dr. Phil Show, where Dr. Phil confronted the “RHOBH” star about her alcoholism, substance abuse, anxiety and depression.
After drinking hard liquor on the evening of April 16, Kim told Dr. Phil she stopped by the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel because she started to feel the intoxicating effects of the booze.
“I started to drive home [after drinking] and it was about when I hit the hotel that I started to feel it,” said Richards. “I pulled in [to the Beverly Hills Hotel] because I’m comfortable there. I’ve been going there since I’m a little girl. The bar was closed. It was empty.”
Kim said she started drinking that night was because she was distraught over her broken relationship with her sister (and “RHOBH” co-star) Kyle Richards. Kim was also distraught because of her strained relationship with Kyle’s daughter, who was hospitalized after Kim’s dog bit her in the hand.
“The relationship between my sister and niece has been destroyed,” Richards sobbed. “It’s been a bad year for us.”
Dr. Phil pulled no punches, asking Kim if her sloppy drunkenness had upset people around her. “Were you loud, were you obnoxious, were you crazy?” McGraw asked.
“It was empty,” said Kim, who said she was alone in the Polo Lounge with the bar’s waitstaff. “The waiter said, ‘If you don’t leave, we’re gonna call the police for trespassing.'”
Drank Alcohol, Took Pills and Smoked Marijuana While Proclaiming Sobriety
At one point, Kim got furious after Dr. Phil questioned her mothering skills and suggested she had been lying about her sobriety for the past three years.
“Are you living a lie telling everyone, ‘I’ve been sober for three years’?” Dr. Phil asked as three of Kim’s four children, Brooke Brinson, Chad Davis, and Kimberly Jackson, looked on. “You are drunk in a bar, fighting with a cop, that is not good mothering. That is meltdown mothering.”
A furious Richards fired back, “Is this an intervention? I’m sorry, I can’t,” before storming off. Kim has struggled with alcoholism for years, and went to rehab for alcoholism and substance abuse in 2011. She has been to rehab two other times in the past.
While Richards has repeatedly claimed on the “RHOBH” that she has been 100% sober for the past three years, she told Dr. Phil that she had drunk alone numerous times before her arrest.
“I did have drinks a couple other times over the past few months. It was wine,” said Kim. “I was ashamed to say anything at the reunion, embarrassed. I would have loved to say to the girls, ‘You know what, you’re right,’ but the way they were coming at me, they didn’t make it easy.”
Kim’s son Chad also revealed she frequently took pills and smoked marijuana. “I live with you,” said Chad. “I’m not saying you were drinking, but you were taking pills, you smoke pot.”
Will Be Fired from ‘RHOBH’ If She Doesn’t Go to Rehab or Get Drug-Tested
Richards was arrested April 16 after cops were called to the Polo Lounge at 1:30 a.m. after complaints about Kim’s drunken behavior. The waiter accused Richards of trespassing and getting loud and obnoxious.
Cops said Richards, 50, was uncooperative, reeked of alcohol and slurred her speech. Kim was taken to a local jail, where she kicked a police officer. Richards was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and public intoxication.
A few days after Dr. Phil’s alcoholism intervention, Kim checked into rehab at a live-in facility in Malibu, California, where she agreed to stay “as long as it takes” to get sober.
Richards had initially refused to go to rehab but changed her mind amid pressure from Bravo executives, who are requiring her to seek help and get regular drug testing or risk getting fired from the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”
The reality show is a major chunk of Kim’s income, so it’s critical she does not violate the show’s sobriety clause. “Her sobriety clause is going to include drug testing – both set and random,” a source told Radar. “They are also demanding that she go to treatment, either in-patient or out-patient. If she wants to remain on the show she will need to go and get some help.”
Kim Richards, who earns six figures from the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” previously said she loves the fan attention she gets from starring on the hit TV show. Ironically, Kim also said being on the show makes her “feel important” because she wants to be a sobriety role model for other recovering addicts.
