Finale week is here for Season 19 of Dancing With the Stars. Tonight the four finalists danced one last time for your votes. (Tomorrow night we find out who wins the mirror ball trophy!) Each couple reprised a past dance chosen by the judges and then performed a freestyle dance.
Bethany and Derek had a little help from Bruno as they rehearsed their very first Jive. The dance started off with a bit of a hitch (there was a problem with timing due to the set transition) but Bethany’s confidence was so apparent this time around. The score was 36/40.
Sadie and Mark brought back their Duck Dynasty Samba with a rehearsal visit from Len. Watching this one a second time around showed a lot of growth in Sadie’s performance. The dance earned high marks with 38/40.
Janel and Val danced their Samba after Janel suffered a slight injury during practice. There was a little less attack on Janel’s part due to the rib injury but she made a great effort. The judges were enthusiastic with a 37/40.
Alfonso and Witney brought back their Jive after some therapy with Carrie Ann. This was one of those instances where someone not familiar with the show might not have known which dancer was the pro in this equation. Yours truly was looking for a slip-up and could not find one. The judges agreed with a perfect 40/40.
The show’s intermission took a moment to plug the new Annie movie. The girls from the movie made a live appearance with an updated version of “Hard Knock Life” choreographed by Mandy Moore.
Then came time for the freestyle round led by Bethany and Derek. The dance was stark and powerful with an ensemble cast. However, sometimes it appears that Bethany lacks a little mobility or flexibility in her center which could be due to her costumes. The ending lift was particularly impressive. The judges gave them a perfect score of 40/40 for a 76 overall.
Sadie and Mark appeared as Princess Peach and Mario in their freestyle dance. Obviously, Mark just wanted to dress up like Mario but the performance was adorable complete with accompanying Luigi and Toad. This was definitely a dance to remember and it was impossible to avoid smiling throughout. The judges agreed with 40/40 for a total of 78 tonight.
Janel and Val’s Contemporary piece was a stunning work of choreography. Passionate and technically complex, it required an incredibly trusting partnership to pull off some of those lifts. These two also earned a perfect 40/40 for a combined score of 77.
Alfonso and Witney’s freestyle was a conglomeration of their entire season with a tap solo built into the fun. The entire performance was a blast. In keeping with the freestyle trend of the evening the judges awarded 40/40 for a perfect 80.
Then it came time to announce the three couples vying for the mirror ball trophy tomorrow night. Unsurprisingly Alfonso and Witney were the first couple to go on to the finale. In the end Bethany and Derek were sent packing.
