Dying Light is an upcoming horror game from developer Techland. In speaking with game producer Tymon Smektala this week, we asked about the details of a specific mode in the game. Players will be able to actually exist as a zombie in the game, and it will take place on the open world maps. We asked about separate PvP maps, and Smektala mentioned there will be none. “The Be the Zombie/Invasion gameplay is available on both of our huge open world maps”, says Smektala, “so there’s no need for separate PvP maps. The location of Zombie Hives – and it’s the Hives that Survivors need to destroy during the match – are different with each session, so we’re using the huge maps to create different scenarios for players each time.”
This mode will add something new for these types of games. The Left 4 Dead series offered something similiar, but not with the vision that Techland has for Dying Light. As for the Be the Zombie mode, there is one stipulation and there is reasoning behind it according to Smektala. “The invasion can happen only during the night – it’s no coincidence that the infected antagonist in this mode is called Night Hunter.” This will certainly make the game more challenging for living characters in the game.
While Smektala confirmed there will be only one playable zombie type in Dying Light, it will not be stagnant. The Night Hunter will be upgraded over the course of multiplayer games as the game offers a good bit of skills to choose from. “Even though you play only as one zombie type, all of its skills are real game changers so your Night Hunter at the start of the game is radically different from one that you’ll develop through repeated multiplayer sessions.” This will allow for a lot of replayability over the course of time.
