Edmonds mom shoots intruder: Mom brings gun to door, fires at man to defend kids

by zoom dune

An Edmonds mom shoots an intruder when a strange man knocks on their front door late on Thanksgiving night. Although the mom has remained unidentified at this time, the woman was said to have brought her gun with her when she opened the door for protection in case she needed to defend her kids. Yet Food World News reports this Friday, November 28, 2014, that the victim — who was critically wounded after being fired at — was an accidental intruder who had drunkenly thought he was at a friend’s house instead.

Sometime after 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving, an Edmonds mom shot an intruder after he reportedly tried entering her home. According to the woman’s account, there was a loud knocking on the front door that night, and it appeared that the stranger was trying to break into the family house. The mom said she thought it might have been a late friend or family member who had just arrived, but after peeking out, saw that it was a man she did not know.

The apparent intruder was alleged to have stuck his foot in between the door when she tried closing it in a hurry to prevent him from entering. When the mom continued to attempt to shut it and the stranger would not move, she opted to fire at the man, shooting him in the stomach area with her gun. The act was said to be one of defense because she had a sleeping husband and several young children in the home.

It has been confirmed that the wary Edmonds mom approached the door with a gun and the unknown stranger was unarmed, notes Komo News. Police officers were immediately called to the home after the shooting, and the mom said she had fired at the intruder because her three children — as well as one of her kids’ friends — were inside and needed to be protected. Law enforcement authorities were said to agree with her assertion of self-defense.

“There were kids in the house, so she was protecting herself and she was scared and so she was doing what she could to protect her family,” noted Edmonds Police Department. Detective Bob Barker. Details on the suspect’s condition or further details were not elaborated upon.

Emergency medical attention was given to the man until an ambulance arrived to rush him to a local hospital. The suspect was confirmed to be Nelson Petrone, a 22-year-old from Edmond. The boy’s brother Evan, however, is shocked at what happened and did not believe that shooting his sibling with a gun was the right move whatsoever given the situation.

“I still don’t believe it. You don’t wake up on Thanksgiving and realize that your brother is in the hospital in intensive care … It is heartbreaking.” Evan added that Nelson’s friends once lived in the home and he was apparently uninformed that they had moved. Thus, when the man knocked on the door, he thought he was reaching out to company that would have known him not to be an intruder. Nelson was drunk at the time, added police.

What is your response to the “Edmonds mom shoots intruder” story that is trending this holiday weekend? So far, there are commenters that are saying the woman was wrong to open fire so suddenly and without apparent provocation. Others, however, contend that she was simply trying to defend her family. The Thanksgiving incident seems to be an unfortunate mistake that turned serious very quickly.
