Actor and philanthropist Edward Norton has recently teaming up with Oskar Metsavaht, of Brazilian fashion brand Osklen and founder of Instututo E, a non profit organization that focuses on sustainable projects and Joe Einhorn, creator of Fancy to sell a special limited edition jacket that is the same as he worn in ‘Birdman’. Named after his character in the movie, Mike Shiner, the limited edition unisex jacket is called ‘The Shriner’. The jacket is currently available exclusively online at Fancy.com, and at Osklen stores in Miami and New Your City. All proceeds from the sale of the jacket will go directly to the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust protects the legendary ecosystems and astounding biodiversity of East Africa through conservation that directly benefits local Maasai communities. For over a decade Edward Norton has been involved with this environmental protection and sustainable development project for over a decade.
The popularity of the guerrilla style utility jacket on the set of Birdman was what drove Edward Norton to bring the idea to create the jacket again to Osklen since the jacket was no longer in production. Oskar Metsavaht agreed to make the jacket in a new special edition limited quantity which was named ‘The Shriner’.
‘ I met Oskar Metsavaht at a Rio Climate Conference. We are both environmental activists and we became friends right away. I loved his Osklen board shorts and hoodies, but my favorite piece was this great guerrilla style jacket. Like something Che Guevara would have worn on a brisk day in Paris. I wore it to rehearsals and (‘Birdman’s’ director) Alejandro Iñárritu loved it and made it Mike Shiner’s uniform. He wanted one, Chivo, the film’s cinematographer wanted one, and so did many other friends so I approached Oskar with this idea.’-Edward Norton
On creating the jacket, Oskar Metsavaht said; ‘Edward and I first connected over our shared passions for protecting the environment and surfing. Everyone at Osklen loved seeing our jacket on the classic character he created in one of the most audacious and original films in a long time. When Edward told us everyone wanted the coat, and proposed teaming up to turn that into something positive…we said ‘of course!’ Artistic passion and environmental sustainability are very much the spirit of Osklen, so this is a great fit.’
Together Osklen and Edward Norton decided that all the proceeds of the sales would be donated to the Massai Wilderness CT through Instituto E. To do this, Norton turned to Joe Einhorn, founder of Fancy.com to ensure that all the proceeds would go there. In regards to the union between the three Joe Einhorn said; ‘Fancy is all about people sharing the things they love with others. When an artist like Edward has a great idea to share a really special collector’s item from a film that is already an instant classic, and to do it for a great cause…that’s a no-brainer. We love working with people like Edward and Oskar..’
According to Edward Norton, by purchasing the jacket people get the chance to contribute to one of the ‘greatest environmental protection and sustainable development projects on the planet’ as well as owing something that very few people actually own.
The jacket is available in the army green that was featured in ‘Birdman’ as well as in black which was worn by Edward Norton on his most recent Malibu Magazine photo shoot. The jacket on the inside is embroidered with Norton’s signature. With a price tag of $300, the jacket can be purchased by visiting Fancy at http://fancy.to/edward and online at Osklen at http://store.osklen.com/men/casacos.html.
