As much as skin could look better without pores, they are a necessity – that’s how oil and sweat reach the skin’s surface. That being said, you’re stuck with the pore size you’re born with, but there are ways to minimize the look of pores.
Teresa Stenzel, director of education for Bioelements, shares her insight on the most sought-after solutions for smooth skin. She separates the facts from fiction so you can achieve maximum results and optimal skin health.
Stenzel debunks common misconceptions
Fiction: Pore strips safely remove dirt, oil and unclog your pores.
Fact: Pore strips aren’t much different than duct tape. The suction of the glue ripping off your skin can take a bit of dirt out of a pore, but it’s also ripping off skin cells on the surface. This is an invitation for irritation.
Fiction: A pore filler will erase the look of pores.
Fact: If your goal is to make your pores appear smaller, filling them up with a pore filler is the exact opposite of what you should be doing! Once a buildup of products like fillers, along with of dirt, oil, and dead skin, fill up and stretch out a pore, it won’t go back to its smaller size.
The perfect pore plan
Fact: The first step to creating barely there pores is to apply a mild exfoliator to make way for a fresh surface. Follow with a pore-refining mask with active natural clay to absorb oil and dirt, and improve texture.
Quick Refiner ($46, 3 fl. oz.): This leave on gel facial exfoliator visibly smooths skin with powerful AHA acids and speeds up cell turnover. Built-in buffers and strengthening plant extracts protect the new cells that have just been uncovered, improving dullness and lines. After cleansing the skin, apply a thin layer over skin and neck without rinsing off. In as little as one day, skin will be visibly improved and pore size will be dramatically reduced.
Restorative Clay ($35, 2.5 fl. oz.):
Bring the spa to your home with this facial treatment that absorbs excess dirt and oil and refines pores. Containing active natural clay, this mask works like a vacuum, unclogging pores to rid skin of impurities. A blend of plant extracts and Chamomile work simultaneously to balance and calm the skin, improving hydration for a fresh and bright finish. Apply over the face and neck and let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing, then follow with moisturizer. Use one to three times a week for optimal results.
