Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland spoke about their upcoming bout during a Friday interview with Fight Hype.
Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will scrap Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) in a 12-round affair at a maximum weight of 155 pounds on May 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The Mexican superstar last vacated the squared circle in July after earning a somewhat controversial split decision over Erislandy Lara.
Styles make clashes and Alvarez and Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs) couldn’t be more opposite prizefighters.
Alvarez relentlessly attacked Lara, opened a cut on the Cuban’s right eye in the seventh, and nearly floored him in the following round with a savage body shot.
In stark contrast to the dynamic Mexican, Lara refused to engage and essentially sprinted from Alvarez for 36 consecutive minutes.
Lara threw punches off his back foot, strictly competed to validate his defensive wizardry, and never even stunned Alvarez.
Pugilism is extremely subjective and it’s understandable that many onlookers were divided on this bout’s scoring.
Regardless, despite being a true ring technician, Lara didn’t deserve credit for avoiding Alvarez.
“I’m very happy that my upcoming fight with James Kirkland will air on HBO,” said Alvarez, 24, who began boxing professionally at the ludicrous age of 15.
“Kirkland is a dangerous fighter who is coming prepared for a tough night and this fight, without a doubt, will be one to remember. I promise my fans I will be victorious and invite everyone to come out and join us at Minute Maid Park on May 9. They will not be disappointed.”
“A dangerous fighter” and man, Kirkland is a convicted felon who has not fought since knocking out Glen Tapia in the sixth round in December 2013.
Nicknamed the “Mandingo Warrior,” Kirkland is an aggressive southpaw with cinder blocks for fists.
“This is the fight I’ve been waiting for,” said Kirkland, 30, a native Texan who was previously trained by Ann Wolfe.
“Canelo is the opponent I get asked about more than any other fighter. I’m ready to show my skills to the world and shut down the people who doubt me. Come fight night you will see a great fight between two warriors and I know at the end of the night my hand will be raised in victory.”
Unlike Lara, Kirkland will fiercely pursue and attack Alvarez.
However, Kirkland’s rust and inactivity will prove to be insurmountable versus the powerful youngster.
In “a great fight between two warriors,” Canelo Alvarez will stop James Kirkland late to emerge victorious.
