Many “Fifty Shades of Grey” fans are likely feeling the heat this week with the first teaser trailer for the sequel film, “Fifty Shades Darker,” sizzling its way into the news. Although the 30-second video clip is mysterious as it is brief, fans are clearly able to see Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey putting on an alluring mask that only adds more fuel to audiences’ fire of desire. US Magazine also shares this Thursday, April 30, 2015, that a top movie executive from Universal Pictures has also revealed that this second adaptation in the trilogy is going to be a “thriller” that raises the stakes on more than one level.
As if our excitement couldn’t be raised any further before the month of May arrives, Universal executives have offered yet another steamy morsel for us to consider while we endure the long wait. It was confirmed earlier this month that the anticipated release date for the “Fifty Shades of Grey” sequel – expected to be titled “Fifty Shades Darker” like the second installment of the original novel trilogy – is set for February 10, 2017. Another Valentine’s Day weekend debut is almost too perfect, no?
Although the first “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie broke many boundaries with its mature content, R-rating, and unabashed willingness to show carefully crafted BDSM and sexually related scenes on the silver screen, “Darker” could very well raise the stakes. Donna Langley, chairwoman of Universal Pictures, recently opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, sharing that the hype already surrounding the sequel film is not without reason. Fans will likely be surprised by what ideas they have in store, even this early in the game.
Although she is cleverly keeping a majority of details under leather, lock, and key, TIME News notes that in addition to a brief teaser trailer this week, Langley said that the “Fifty Shades Darker” movie is going to be even “more of a thriller.” Talk about interesting sex-capades! There also has been confirmation that EL James’ own personal Christian Grey of sorts, her husband and fellow author/producer Niall Leonard, will be writing the sequel’s script. There’s more, too, so don’t let yourself be dominated just yet.
“He actually did a draft that wasn’t credited on the first movie,” Langley stated to fans while speaking of Leonard, who has previous screenwriting credits for work on various TV series including Wild at Heart. “He did a really good job.”
The teaser trailer itself leaves much to the imagination, but just that single glimpse of Christian Grey putting on a masquerade mask in anticipation of the Red Room of Pain is enough to whet many fans’ appetites for now. Virtually no other pertinent information has been made available in the short clip, but if anything, it only sets our communal expectation levels higher for the “Fifty Shades Darker” sequel movie.
No word has yet been given over who might be taking Sam Taylor-Johson’s place as director in the second film, but there is little doubt that the Universal executive team is working closely with EL James. James herself has made it widely known that she once again intends to keep a firm hand in the creation and development of all “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie versions. And with Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey certainly heating things up, it may be worthwhile for us all to stay warm. Sources have added that they are already on the lookout for a talented figure who might bring justice to the important role as director, so we will need to keep our eyes – and perhaps our clothes, for that matter – peeled. “Fifty Shades Freed,” the third book in the successful franchise by EL James, will also be made into a movie, and has an anticipated release date of Valentine’s Day weekend (early February), 2018.
