The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) responded to a criminal mischief call in Mary Esther, Florida, at 2:48 a.m. on Nov. 30 regarding a man allegedly knocking over Christmas decorations and yelling at another person, according to a press release. When deputies got to the scene, they received information directing them to a nearby home where they made a gruesome discovery.
Inside a house located on Avon Lane in Mary Esther, deputies discovered 65-year old Gloria Watkins of that address, dead and slumped over a couch with arrows sticking out of her head, according to a follow-up release from the sheriff’s office. Also inside the home was Watkins’ son, 42-year old Michael Watkins.
When the son walked out of the house to greet the deputies, he did so sporting a sheathed knife in his waistband. Ignoring repeated commands to get on the ground, sheriff’s officers deployed their Tasers twice in their efforts to take Watkins into custody. The deputies arrested Watkins and charged him with murder and resisting arrest. During the OSCO interview with Watkins, investigators learned the reasons why the suspect said he felt it necessary to kill his mother.
After the mother’s body was examined, deputies discovered that the 65-year-old mom had been violated with more than just the arrows protruding from her head. According to ABC News, Watkins informed investigators that early this morning, he shot his mother twice with a gun, then shot her in the head several times with a bow-and-arrow and then stabbed her because the man’s mom “stole his diamonds and also gave his father cancer.” The son also told investigators that “he had to kill her because she was trying to kill him,” although Watkins didn’t go into detail or explain why he thought his mother was going to kill him.
Watkins freely admitted to killing his mother. “You see that, that’s death,” Watkins said as he pointed to his mother, according to the OCSO police report.
