I recently had the pleasure to sit down with Flyleaf’s lead singer, Kristen May to talk about headlining Revolver’s Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock tour and their latest album Between The Stars. She is as genuine as they come: warm and charming, I felt as if I was talking to a relative rather than someone who would be raising the roof off the State Theater in downtown St. Petersburg just two hours later.
Since joining Flyleaf about two and a half years ago, she has developed a strong working relationship with “Revolver Magazine.” After being chosen for the annual issue of Revolver’s 25 Hottest Chicks magazine, she was notified about headlining this year’s tour. She explains, “When I joined Flyleaf they were one of my first interviews. They supported me, asked good questions and wanted to get to know me and the new Flyleaf music moving forward. I was happy to do something involving Revolver and happy to do something involving other women as well.”
Judging by the enthusiasm of the Southwest Florida crowd, I can imagine that the response from other cities nationwide has been comparable. Kristen tells me, “It’s been great! Jacksonville and Ft. Lauderdale have probably been the highlights. Flyleaf hasn’t been to Florida in a long time and not since I joined the band. Super fans and people tell us they haven’t seen us since 2006-2007 and they’re so happy when we came back. It’s great when there’s a large number of people are there, but also when they are engaged.”
Touring sometimes can be monotonous; arriving at the venue, setting up, doing the set then tearing it down only to do it all over again the following day in a new city. To break out of the same routine, sometimes bands will do something adventurous and fun. Flyleaf is certainly no exception. On an upcoming tour stop they plan to take a break and try indoor skydiving. I asked Kristen if she had ever jumped out of an airplane before and this is what she had to say:
“(Laughing) No, I have not. This is something I’m debating if I really want to do or not.” Somehow the phrase “My parachute’s in shreds” from their current hit, “Thread” comes to mind. Check out the video here.
The band has endured quite a bit of success with their latest album, Between The Stars on Loud and Proud Records. The album hit the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Current Alternative Albums and includes the hit “Set Me On Fire” – watch the video here.
“This is something that we’re all really proud of”, explains Kristen, “we all came together, Pat Sear and I especially. We write a lot as far as melodies and lyrics. We have a lot to pull from, all five of us.”
“We wanted to make something that we loved to listen to first and the fans were into as well. I think we came up with something that’s emotional and uplifting. I think it’s an album that you should listen to front to back because that’s how we created it.”
As Flyleaf began their set, Kristen left no doubt that she was in charge. The confidence that she takes to the stage is her best asset. She owns that stage. Fans are immediately sucked in and drawn to her for the entire set. Never holding anything back, she pours her heart and soul into her performance so much so you can feel her emotions tugging at your heart-strings. Very powerful indeed.
