Circuit of the Americas (COTA) and Masters Historics Racing released a joint announcement on Friday, February 20, that Masters’ vintage Formula One cars will compete in a support race at the 2015 Formula One United States Grand Prix in Austin. According to Masters, historic Formula One cars from both the United States and Europe will be competing, and the USGP will be the only current Formula One grand prix where Masters will appear this season.
According to the Masters Historic Racing website, the organization was founded in 2004 and this year will feature 17 events across Europe and North America for its many owner/racer members. For the Historic Formula One class, race events include Brands Hatch and Silverstone in the UK; Zandvoort in Holland; and Spa. The United States Grand Prix, taking place over the weekend of October 23-25, will be the concluding event of the Historic Formula One season.
Up to 38 historic Formula One cars will be on the grid in Austin this October. Fans will be able to see cars that competed in the series decades ago. Hearing the different kinds of engines (mostly louder) will be qualitatively different from the quieter hybrid engines of the 2015 season. Fans may want to bring earplugs to guard against the scream of some of the older cars — others will enjoy the very sounds that contributed to their appreciation of Formula One years ago.
Masters Historic Racing Founder, Ron Maydon, commented in the announcement, “We are delighted to be providing a support race for the GP this October. I can’t think of a more fitting end to our 2015 season than some Texan sunshine and U.S. hospitality! It is another fantastic opportunity for our drivers to showcase these wonderful cars for this support race and we are sure that a number of our European drivers will join their U.S. counterparts in Austin in October. I for one have my Stetson at the ready!”
Circuit of The Americas Founder and Chairman, Bobby Epstein, commented, “Historic cars racing on the most modern circuit in the world is guaranteed to be a great show. We could not be more pleased that Formula One has added this series to the 2015 United States Grand Prix weekend.”
Racing legend Mario Andretti, 1978 Formula One Driver Champion and now Ambassador for COTA said, “It will be awesome to see some of the most famous cars in Formula 1 history on track at Circuit of The Americas during the U.S. Grand Prix weekend in October.” He continued, “The sights and sounds of these iconic machines will bring back great memories for me of my own days racing in F1 and I’m sure the fans who come to the U.S. Grand Prix will leave with some incredible memories of some of the cars that so many legendary drivers used to race.”
The F1 United States Grand Prix takes place at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas October 23-25. This year’s grand prix will mark the fourth time the race has taken place at the new, purpose-built track in Texas. Tickets are on sale now through COTA.
