The annual Fresno Art Hop. Anyone who has spent some time here in the Tower District has more than likely heard of it. That’s awesome but what is it? What is it about this art hop that’s worth all this excitement? How is it any different than visiting a local art gallery or studio?
For those who have only heard a mention of the Fresno Art Hop stay tuned this one’s for all of you. Firstly, the whole art hop was brought to life by the Fresno Arts Council. Since its beginnings it has grown to over fifty participants from just about every possible type of art venue you can think of, if anyone cares to think that hard. Art lovers from every point on the spectrum converge on Fresno’s Tower District on each month’s first Thursday to immerse themselves in hard core art culture. As for the rest of Fresno, they can experience the hop on each third Thursday. This is where you’d go if you wanted to visit an art gallery, museum or studio the size of a small town. Put another way, this is like an art lover’s Wonka factory. Everyone can relate to that. How does the Art Hop work, being the size of a small town and all? Now we’re getting to the good stuff. There is a massive amount of artists all within throwing distance from each other so why not all get together, say during the Art Hop, and open their doors to the city and then some? So from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each artist welcomes the masses to view their works, visit and converse with them and then start again with their ‘neighbors’ shops and so on. It’s the same idea as a pub crawl. Visit one venue after another. For three beautiful hours visitors can view, enjoy, listen, learn and converse with kindred spirits and the artists themselves. Why would an artist showcase, within their own four walls, here? What do they get out of it? Seriously? They gain exposure and potential art buyers that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. The Art Hop brings hundreds of people from everywhere throughout the Valley to these artists. Although the artists must stay within their businesses, here they can network with others in Fresno and sometime afterwards catch up with each other and shop talk or art talk if you will. Who doesn’t like to sit and chat with like minded people, right? After all the hop is for the artists every bit as much as it is for the patrons.
Now we know that Art Hop is an art program as a means of sharing Fresno’s art culture. It’s awesome because it is a city of art within a city the size of a small town, give or take. The hop is for artists and art lovers alike, seriously what more does anyone need to know? Except maybe where to get this year’s schedule. Visit fresnoartsconcil.org/arthop for details like when and where. As always get out there and enjoy.
