Washi tape is pretty, colorful and a decorative material that is easily removable. Use it to dress up lamp shades, cabinet doors, and much more!
If you’ve never heard of washi tape, it is a tape made of paper that feels much like masking tape. It comes in amazing colors, patterns and designs, which makes it great for decorating just about anything. It’s easy to remove, which is a bonus if you rent or like to change up your décor often.
Here are a few ways to refresh a room with washi tape.
Lamp shade – Add a little detail to a plain lamp shade by bordering the top and bottom with tape. Or, go bold by crisscrossing multiple prints all over the shade for a colorful look.
Side table – Cover the top of a side table to create a fresh new look. Place strips of tape in different lengths next to each other to create a funky new tabletop.
Wall art – Create frames directly on the wall with a colorful assortment of washi tape. Insert your favorite portrait, and you’ve got a very unique bit of wall art.
Vase – Buy several inexpensive clear glass vases and dress them up with pretty strips of tape. Washi tape is available in various widths, so don’t be afraid to mix and match colors, shapes and patterns.
Ceiling fan – Dress up a ceiling fan by putting a different color tape on each blade. This is an especially cute idea for a kid’s room. Or, decorate a sports themed room by using your team’s colors on the blades, instead.
Mini blinds – Cover up those horrible mini blinds with a fun printed tape. There’s very little work involved with this idea, simply cover each slat with the tape for a fresh new look.
Bookcase– Add a pop of color, and create depth to an old bookcase. Simply cover the bookcase backs with wide tape. Be sure to pick a color or pattern that coordinates with the color of the bookcase itself.
Door – Frame-out the panels of any door and see what dramatic results you get. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure the tape is applied evenly to the panels.
Dresser drawers – Outline dresser drawers with washi tape to bring new life to a bedroom. Use a second pattern to cover dresser knobs. This idea will work beautifully on kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors, too!
Light switches – Cover light switches with strips of washi tape. Place them at a diagonal and use at least two coordinating patterns to make this look work. The same technique can be used on the electrical outlets in a room, as well.
Picture frames – Create a matte for picture frames with your favorite washi tape design. The colors and textures will bring out the best in all your favorite photos.
These ideas are just a few to get you started. As you can see, with a little imagination you can come up with many different ways to add a pop of color just about anywhere in the house with this ever-versatile craft tape.
