While Arlington County government grapples with shrinking budgets, it is important to rally behind the initiatives that are working to keep arts alive that is Gallery Underground and the Arlington Artists Alliance. Seemingly from out of nowhere, Gallery Underground has become an exciting arts destination in Crystal City that serves the entire community. The broad participation by area artists draws a large sustaining audience that enhances the quality of life here.
With that note, what are they serving up in March? Well, it is “Screaming Babies” for one thing. The chances are that you won’t hear screaming babies (but you might). You might hear and see some chuckling people looking at screaming babies.
“MARCH SHOWS at GALLERY UNDERGROUND
Focus Gallery: “SCREAMING BABIES” Linda Lowery Solo Exhibit
Dates: March 2-28, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, March 6, 5-8pm
Arlington, VA – A solo show in the Focus Gallery, “Screaming Babies” features large portraits with a close-up view of raw emotion. Linda Lowery has been painting and drawing crying babies for the past five years in a loose, expressionistic style using bold color. Whatever feelings they evoke, they’ll grab your attention and you won’t soon forget these images.
Lowery notes, “The pain and discomfort depicted in these portraits is a metaphor for the pain and discomfort we experience all of our lives. … when we see a picture of an infant crying, we identify with the baby’s pain or feelings of abandonment and insecurity and fright.” In these faces we are confronted with the human condition coalesced in the faces of newborns.”
