After an 18 month story line, it was revealed yesterday on General Hospital that Fluke is actually Luke with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This is a real mental illness with 20 thousand to 200 thousand people being diagnosed with it per year. General Hospital Blog is reporting that Luke’s D.I.D., came about because of a traumatic event he suffered as a child growing up in that house on Elm Street. Is it just irony that the writer’s chose to name the street Luke and Bobbie Spencer grew up on Elm Street? Probably not.
On yesterdays episode which can be seen at the General Hospital YouTube Channel, while Bobbie was visiting her brother in lock up, she made the person sitting in the cell take a cold hard look at what he had done and she must have touched a place in Fluke because the audience watched as Fluke disappeared and someone more like Luke resurfaced.
With Dissociative Identity Disorder, there are usually more than two (2) personalities. The personality that surfaced yesterday was weak, frail and afraid. That is not the Luke Spencer that viewers have been watching for years. There is a good chance the viewer will be treated to 3 or 4 personalities before all is said and done.
This is not the first time that D.I.D., has been featured on a daytime soap opera. One Life to Live covered this for years with a lead character, Victoria Lord Buchanan portrayed by the fabulous Erica Slazak. The story that was told on OLTL was that when Vicki was a child, her father molested her. She split into different personalities so she could live with herself. Victoria had at least 5 different personalities, ie: Niki, Tori, Jean, Tommy & a little princess character whom was believed to be little girl Victoria before the abuse. Niki Smith, Victoria’s strongest alter personality lived a life of her own for many years when life got to tough for Victoria.
Erica won Emmy’s for this story line. A poignant scene on this story line can be seen at YouTube. One Life to Live took it one step further and gave Victoria’s daughter Jessica D.I.D., after she suffered a traumatic event in her younger years which then was triggered by a devastating event in her teen years (the death of her baby girl.) Jessica had another personality named Tess that the audience grew to love. They called the other personalities, “alters” on OLTL.
Now that it has been revealed that Luke has D.I.D., the story line should take the viewers on a journey through Luke and Bobbie’s childhood so the viewer can discover why Luke has developed Dissociative Identity Disorder. What traumatic event happened to him to cause this divide in personality? Anthony Geary has some Emmy winning scenes coming up on General Hospital.
