Georgia’s only female death row inmate has ordered a massive last meal and even though she is facing death, it appears her appetite is still intact. This inmate’s time on death row is coming to an end as she’s sentenced to die by lethal injection on Feb. 25. Kelly Renee Gissendaner has one hearty appetite if her last meal request is any indication.
According to ABC News on Feb 19, Gissendaner has ordered two cheeseburgers, two large orders of fries, lemonade and a salad made of boiled eggs, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, carrots, cheese and buttermilk dressing. Along with that she has also ordered cherry vanilla ice cream, popcorn and cornbread, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
The Spread It today reports that folks are not happy about taxpayer’s footing the bill for this elaborate meal when this woman is charged with the murder of her husband and is about to die. You might say that this female inmate is lucky that she is in Georgia on death row instead of Texas, although most would not consider being on death row lucky in any way, shape or form.
In Texas the last meal request was done away with in 2011. Lawrence Russell Brewer ordered enough food for an army then refused to eat it. This really aggravated the prison officials and ruined it for those who would die after him. Today you eat what you get!
Brewer’s request was just as elaborate as the Georgia woman’s menu. He ordered, “two chicken-fried steaks, triple bacon cheeseburger and meat-lover’s pizza.” There appears to be a phenomenon among the death row inmates when it comes to those bacon cheeseburgers! They are usually considered taboo to eat because of all the calories and fat, but if this is your last meal then you can understand why one would throw all caution to the wind.
Back in 1998 Gissendaner was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband. She was accused and found guilty of recruiting her boyfriend to kill her husband. She talked her boyfriend, Gregory Bruce Owen, into kidnapping and then killing Doug Gissendaner.
The obliging boyfriend kidnapped the husband, beat him and then stabbed him numerous times about the neck and back. Kelly was in a nightclub as this was going on, but she later had her boyfriend take her to her husband’s body to make sure he was dead.
She then instructed her boyfriend to burn the husband’s car, supplying him with the kerosene to do so. After a crime like this some think Texas has the right idea. Why should someone like Gissendaner get an elaborate last meal?
