Geraldo Rivera, reporting for the Fox News Channel, was confronted by a man in West Baltimore just prior to Rivera going on the air Tuesday. The reporter and TV personality was given a verbal rebuking, caught on video and seen above, shortly before going on air with a state senator. After Fox News starting broadcasting, Rivera and the protestor appeared as if they were going to fight one another.
Writes The Wrap, via MSN News: “While reporting for Fox News Tuesday night, Geraldo Rivera almost came to blows with a protestor interfering with his camera shot. The two went back and forth, seeming to shove each other. Rivera eventually moved to another spot for an interview with a state senator, who asked the media to move back instead of inciting people.”
“Don’t walk away when I start talking,” the unnamed protestor says. “That’s the problem… You’ve got protection from all these black folks; we’re the ones that need protection.”
As Rivera, who for the most part refuses to engage the man, simply wanders about the crowd with a smirk, one man yells: “We got Geraldo on the run ya’ll! We got Geraldo on the run.”
“A black man can raise his voice, and you don’t have to be intimated,” the protestor says. “I want you and Fox News to get out of Baltimore city. Because you’re not here reporting about the boarded up homes. Or the homeless people on the MLK. You’re not here reporting about the poverty levels up and down North Avenue. Two years ago, for the 300-Man March, we marched and you weren’t here. But you’re here for the black riots. You’re not here for the death of Freddie Gray.”
After the broadcast starts, additional video, seen here, shows Rivera struggling to be heard above the shout of the man, who is joined by other protestors. Speaking of the 10 p.m. city curfew, Rivera says: “It’s a very excited crowd where I am standing right now. As the deadline has come and now we will see if the people clear.”
As the man walks in front of Geraldo’s cameraman, Rivera says: “C’mon, get out of the way man.” The protestor shoots back with: “Don’t touch me.”
“Stop it. You’re making a fool of yourself, you’re making a fool of yourself!” Rivera yells. “No, I’m making a fool of Fox News!” the man says. Others in the crowd yell out: “We don’t need your false coverage!” Rivera then tries to lead the state senator away, saying: “If we can just get her away from these vandals here.”
“We want the media to move back,” Maryland State Senator Catherine Pugh tells Rivera. “It seems like they want trouble,” Rivera says, eliciting a stern retort from Pugh: “No they don’t want trouble,” she says.
Adds the Inquisitr: “Baltimore has seen several days of protests after the death of Freddie Gray, who was arrested by police after a short chase. Witnesses said Gray appeared to be having a serious medical crisis, but he was not treated at the scene. He later collapsed and was taken to a hospital, where he died several days later. Family members said Gray had a broken neck and crushed voice box.”
