Let’s face it, the British know their shoes, and boy can they make them. Brands such as Church’s, John Lobb, Loake, Crockett & Jones, are all synonymous with British shoemaking heritage, and in many cases, Northampton, aka. the historical home of English shoes. And while each of these brands, as well as a myriad of others, offer some of the finest materials, craftsmanship, and style the world over, they also usually share another thing in common; price. While there is a decided satisfaction in paying a mint for a fine pair of shoes, perhaps even bespoke, some gents just can’t rationalize taking that plunge.
For those of you a bit more modest in budget, get to know Grenson. The brand dates all the way back to 1866 in, yep, you guessed it, Northampton, with a few other stops along the way. Having fallen on some hard financial times in the 1980s and 1990s, and with little historical distribution or following in the States, you may not be familiar with the brand, and that is fair.
A new ownership group has made great strides in the brand’s marketing efforts and with some strategic retail partnerships in the US, as well as the proliferation of online retailing, Grenson is finally becoming a name to know in the States, which is a great thing. And while there is still no stand-alone Grenson store in the US, they continue to add to their list of designated retailers, so the opportunity to find their product offerings in this country is as great now as it has ever been.
Still manufactured in England and featuring all of the classic British stylings, Grenson really sets the hook with more modest pricing. Brogues, monk-straps, Chelsea boots, cap-toe oxfords, loafers, with hand burnished leather, suede, patent leather, you name it, Grenson makes it, and at a fraction of the cost of many of their British shoemaking brethren.
So if you’re not aware of the name Grenson, you have now been warned. Check them out, if you’re into the highest quality and craftsmanship, at a more palatable price point, because let’s face it, we all like to get the most bang for our buck.
