A mysterious photo of “ghost boots” is lurking about the Internet this week. The photo was taken by a vacationing father in Japan of his young girl and it showed a bit more than expected. Behind the legs of this posing four-year-old are another set of feet – black booted shoes and loose-fitting black pants, said by some to belong to an ancient samurai, the military nobility of medieval Japan.
Writes ABC News: “This photo of a four-year-old girl on a beach in Zushi, Japan, seems innocent until you look closely behind her legs and back. A closer look appears to reveal a mysterious pair of boots and part of a blue shirt peeking out from behind her. The photo, which was uploaded to Reddit by a friend of the girl’s father, is making the rounds on Internet. Many are speculating the photo shows a Samurai ghost because the beach the girl and her dad were on was across a samurai graveyard.”
The photo was taken last July by Martin Springall. Martin and his family lived in Tokyo at the time, and snapped the pic after a weekend trip to Zushi beach, located on a peninsula in Kanagawa, Japan, on the main island of Honshu. The family lives in Toronto, Canada now, but said when they looked at the photo, they were freaked out by what they saw.
“I took a few pictures, and when I was looking through them at night, I noticed what appeared to be a pair of boots behind her in one of the photos,” Springall said. “I took several of her in the same spot, but only one had the boots.”
It’s not every day that a disembodied samurai photobombs your vacation photos. According to the area’s history, samurai tombs are hidden among the mountains nearby.
Springall said he did not want to post the photo to social media, so a friend did it for him, adding it to Reddit. The mysterious photo, and debate, is now going viral.
The friend wrote: “My friend took this pic of his kid. He’s a bit too disturbed by it all to post himself, so I am doing it for him because I’m fascinated by it. Nobody was around when the photo was taken and certainly nobody was behind her. He took about five photos of her at this spot over a period of about two minutes. I’ve known this guy for years and trust him. It has definitely not been Photoshopped.”
As far as his little girl? Springall says she’s convinced it’s a “nice ghost.”
“My daughter thinks the whole thing is just so funny,” Springall said. “She thinks it’s a ghost, but not a scary ghost – a nice one. My daughter is really shy, and she wouldn’t have taken a picture if there was someone standing behind her, which I would have definitely noticed.”
Okay sleuths, what’s your opinion? A real ghost photo of the specter and its boots or something else?
