Since the summer, the United States has been launching airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and using ground troops to assist in the operations. Despite being a credible threat of Islamic extremism, one Republican thinks that there is an even bigger threat within the United States.
Rep. Isaac Latterell, a Republican state Representative from South Dakota, introduced a bill that would restrict most abortions, and could land doctors who perform them in prison for up to 50 years. In a blog post titled “Planned Parenthood worse than ISIS and lying about it,” Talking Points Memo reported on Feb 18 that Latterell has not only compared the women’s health organization “Planned Parenthood” to the Islamic extremist group ISIS, but also believes they are worse, calling them liars in the process.
“Planned Parenthood abortionists in Sioux Falls are similarly beheading unborn children during dismemberment abortions. Most people are unaware that this is happening, because Planned Parenthood of Sioux Falls denies that they behead or otherwise dismember unborn children.”
Despite Planned Parenthood saying that they only perform first trimester abortions in the state of South Dakota, Latterell is pushing back. The bill, which was passed on Tuesday by the Republican led Health and Human Service committee, is designed to “prohibit the beheading of certain living unborn children and to provide penalties therefor,” in regards to abortions that “separate the skull from the spine.”
Latterell continued his attack on Planned Parenthood, doubling down on his ISIS comparison as he concluded his blog post. The state representative said that the women’s health organization should be held “accountable.”
“No state, no religion, and no organization should ever be allowed to use this unspeakably horrifying method. While we rightly take the speck out of our neighbor’s eye by holding ISIS accountable, let us be sure to take the plank out of our own eye by holding Planned Parenthood accountable.”
Though Latterell and other pro-life, right wing groups claim that the majority of the services performed by Planned Parenthood are abortions, and that they use taxpayer money to do so, research conflicts with these claims. As Factcheck.org points out, only three percent of the total services provided by Planned Parenthood include abortion, roughly 10 percent of their clients. While the organization does receive federal funding, the money they get cannot be used for abortion services, according to law.
