Once again, I’m sending this Guide out a day early on account of the holiday. Things are going to be quiet around town this weekend which creates a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with visiting family and friends and the kids before they head back to school. The following are a few family friendly adventures everyone will enjoy.
Tonight is the final night to view the Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza in Torrance. Taking place for over 40 years, the Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza (also known as Candy Cane Lane) is one of the largest holiday decoration displays in the country. You can walk or drive through the neighborhood reveling in the sights, sounds and scents of the season. It’s a wonderful way to spend the evening and one the entire family will enjoy and remember for years to come. The wildly extravagant decorations are on display through January 1 from about 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For more information and directions, visit the website at http://www.yelp.com/biz/sleepy-hollow-christmas-lights-torrance.
Have you ever seen a falcon or hawk up close? I mean really close…..like having one perched on your hand? Point Discovery at Terranea Resort offers guests and visitors an up-close and personal Birds of Prey Experience. Make an appointment for a private demonstration and learn the history of these magnificent birds including Falcons, Harris Hawks and Eurasian Eagle Owls. The Falconers will explain the general identification of the birds, the role they play at Terranea (these are working birds!) and their importance to the environment. After the demonstration, head to Nelson’s and put your name on the list for lunch and while you’re waiting, take a stroll down the path to the beach. The whales are migrating south so chances are you’ll spot one. Be sure to bring a camera – this experience is one for the books! The demonstration is one hour long and costs $99 for adults, $49 for children. For additional information, call 310-265-2851310-265-2851 or visit the website at http://www.terranea.com/california-family-vacations.
Who wants to have fun with planes? Historic planes….cool planes….fighter planes…..Red Baron kinda planes. The Western Museum of Flight is a treasure trove of aviation history located right here in the South Bay with numerous aircraft, exhibits and other displays, in addition to an extensive aircraft model collection. The knowledgeable staff (all volunteers) are ex-military, pilots and aviation buffs. These men and women really know their stuff and I highly recommend taking the time for a guided tour. It’s a hands-on experience kids of all ages are sure to enjoy and really, who doesn’t want to climb into the cockpit of a fighter jet?!? The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. General Admission is $5, children under 12 years free. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.wmof.com/index.html. The Western Museum of Flight is located at Torrance Airport, 3315 Airport Drive, Red Baron #3 in Torrance.
Forget taking your four-footed friend for a routine stroll – it’s time to mix it up! Canines and their human companions are invited to attend a Social Canine Group Hike on Sunday, January 4 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Portuguese Bend Reserve Trail, located at the south end of Crenshaw Boulevard. These hikes provide an opportunity to enjoy a healthy outdoor activity in the company of like-minded dogs and people. You’re not the only social butterfly in the family – dogs are highly social and always appreciate a little time with their peeps. For additional information, visit the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SocialCanine/events.
These are just a few of the events taking place, so be sure to check the calendar links and ‘Things to Do’ page on my website http://www.southbaybyjackie.com for details on these and other events happening throughout the South Bay.
