With the New Year coming in and changes will evolve I am taking the time to give credit to the soaps in 2014.
I would pick a number one soap and of course it would be The Young and the Restless but I will not do that I will say that the three soaps I cover are all deserving of the top spot for different reasons.
Days of Our Lives has stayed true to themselves, the families, the hospital and the people who made it what it is. Kudos to Ken Corday for keeping it going through rough spots and for getting the much wanted renewal. To the actors who have stayed in Salem and kept viewers tied to them and their lives thank you. To the newcomers who have filled the voids left by actors moving on hooray you have fit in wonderfully. Salem is home/ home to the Hortons, the Bradys the Carvers and yes the DiMeras. home to the many viewers who visit everyday.
General Hospital has a different spin. Things change and Port Charles changes with it. Core families are not celebrated as they are on the other soaps, but since the mob took over PC it is the center of all stories. The Hardy’s who were the soul of the hospital and the town are nowhere to be found replaced by the Corinthos family. The Spencers have only Luke to represent them and they were a huge part of GH in the past. The Scorpios who were law enforcement at their best are gone except for Anna and mac who has become a bartender and maybe the Mayor’s husband.
I do not want this to be negative because GH fans have become fans of the mob and especially the mob boss Sonny Corinthos and his on again off again lover Carly. The violence and murder lends itself into a macabre soap where life and death hang in the balance everyday. In Port Charles it is hard to distinguish the good guy from the bad. They all have certain charm and women seem to fall at their feet. The good guys take a beating in PC, not physically but they are looked at as soft in a town full of tough guys.
Sonny, Sean, Julian, Duke all have that rough quality that women seem to love. Love them enough to tune in everyday to see who lives and who is gone from the scene. Faison, Helena, Fluke are considered the real bad guys in PC and they leave a path of destruction to good and bad in their horrific wake.
Doctors are few and far between. Right now General Hospital can only afford a Chief of Staff, a brain doc and a surgeon. They can’t even afford more than a couple of nurses who do it all and the patients are invisible. Unlike Days the hospital is a stop for criminals to be patched up and sent back to kill again.
This is beginning to sound negative and though violence is not my cup of tea I must admit GH can keep you locked in and looking for more. The actors are wonderful and play it anyway it is written masterfully. The new EP and HW Valentini and Carlivatti have been able to adjust to the different lifestyle than Landview and are keeping GH on the air and strong.
The Young and the Restless is another soap that has kept the core families alive and well. The Abbotts, the Newmans and the Winters are all well represented. Katherine Chancellor is never forgotten as it should be on all soaps. The matriarch and heart of Genoa City is mentioned often and holidays are celebrated remembering her as the marvelous Jeanne Cooper deserves.
The families work at their family businesses and time is spent as most people do, at work and then at home.
Jack Abbott the head of the Abbott family is a flawed but good man who loves his family but does not hurt them in the name of love. They are strong and loving and always have each others backs.
Victor Newman is also flawed and good is never used with his name. He is a hard task master who must run everyone’s life as he sees fit. Hs wife and children all pay a heavy price for being in the Newman family.
The Winters are a truly loving family who have been through a lot of hard times and come out together. Now they will face betrayal among them and Neil his wife Hillary and son Devon are in a very bad situation which can only get worse. Still I have every confidence that in the end they will still be a family who cares about each other. That is their best quality and it shines through every day.
Number one for 26 years straight says it all. No EP or HW can take that away and many have tried.
Congratulations to all of the soaps that are left and to those we have lost we can only say we miss you everyday.
Happy New Year and we hope 2015 will bring more soaps to the millions of viewers who have stayed true to this genre..
