Many haunted objects can be found throughout the world. Robert the Doll is one such object. Robert is actually one of North America’s most famous haunted dolls. Over the years, multiple people have witnessed odd the evil things that this doll has done and, some people are still seeing odd things that Robert does in the present.
In the early 1900s, the doll was given to Robert Eugene Otto (Gene) as a gift from one of the family’s servants. The doll made in the likeness of young Gene. The boy named the doll Robert, after his own first name. It is believed that the servant girl cursed the doll because she was mad at Gene’s parents for firing her from her duties.
From the day Gene received the doll as a gift, the boy brought the toy along with him everywhere he went. Robert even had his own seat at the family dinner table, right beside Gene. It wasn’t long before the relationship between the boy and his doll became worrisome.
When the child would play with his doll in his bedroom, the servants and his mother could hear two sets of voices coming from behind the closed door. There were times when Gene’s mother would enter the room and find him cowered in the corner with the doll sitting nearby. The doll always seemed to glare angrily at the boy.
Eventually, even stranger things started to happen around the home. Servants were locked out of rooms and out of the home. Silverware and dishes started to fly around the dining room. Clothing and bedding would be found ruined. Other toys that belonged to Gene were mutilated. Little Gene was often blamed for the strange things that were happening in the home. Many times, the boy would tell his parents and servants that Robert was the one causing all of the mischief. Of course, no one believed the boy and he was punished for the wrongdoings.
Gene’s parents never believed that the doll had anything to do with the bad things that were happening around them. The servants and one of Gene’s aunts believed that the doll had everything to do with the strange occurrences. One day, Gene’s aunt had the doll put in a box and placed in the attic. Not long after that the aunt died. Medical reports say she died from a stroke but, not long after her death, Robert was again at Gene’s side.
When Gene was an adult and his parents died, he remained living in the family home. When Gene was in his twenties, he got married. Some people say that once he married, Gene put the doll in his old bedroom, where it stayed until the couple passed away. Others say that Gene still brought the doll with him everywhere he went. The doll even had a special seat beside their bed where he could watch everything that took place there. This slowly drove Gene’s wife insane and that she eventually passed away from undisclosed reasons.
After Gene and his wife passed away, it is said that the house was left empty for a while and Robert the Doll was on his own. Eventually a new couple bought the home and they found Robert, they placed him in a box and put it in the attic. The doll didn’t stay in the box and the new couple would find him hanging out in random places throughout the house. One night they found the doll standing at the foot of their bed. Robert was giggling and had a knife in his hands. It wasn’t long after that that the new couple left the Key West home and Robert the Doll was brought to the East Martello Museum, where he still resides today.
Although Robert now lives in a museum, many witnesses still report giggles and, the rustling of footsteps, across the floors of the home where the doll use to reside. Other witnesses say that they can see the face of the doll staring out windows at them as they pass by the house.
Robert does not like to be at the museum. Visitors say that one minute they look at him and he is smiling and the next minute the doll is snarling or frowning. He does not like to have his picture taken and most pictures of him come out black. The museum has tried to give the area where Robert sits more light, but the lighting is still bad. People have also reported having their cameras break while trying to snap pictures of the doll.
