He was emaciated beyond words, old, and terribly neglected – but his million-watt smile lit up the room and inspired animal lovers worldwide.
Despite his neglected condition, rescuers noticed that the relieved pup managed the smallest of happy, contented smiles – because he knew that he was finally safe.
Boris and his rescuers were hoping for a holiday miracle, but it was not to be. Sadly, Boris passed away this week – but not before he touched the lives of so many, showing them that every life does matter. And thanks to Leave No Paws Behind, he didn’t die alone.
Leave No Paws Behind (LNPB) posted on its Facebook page yesterday:
Sometimes the world grows silent and all that is left is the sound of a beating heart that has been broken.
According to LNPB, Boris was 16 to 17 years of age – and before the organization saved him, he had lived a life of “total neglect.” Their Facebook page stated:
He came to us with a broken spirit. His frail little body was wasting away from starvation from a life of total neglect.
The instant I held him in my arms, he knew he was safe and loved and try as he did to rally, sadly his little body could no longer withstand the trauma it had endured. Yes he came to us broken, alone, battered and wondering, I am sure, what he did so wrong.
As I held him so closely in my arms for the last time, he let out the tiniest of little howls and I realized he was thanking me for the gift of dignity, loving arms to embrace him and letting him know how much his life matters.
The paged added: “I wonder myself how I can do what I do, however to be at the side of a dying animal as he licks my hand, thanking me for letting him know how much his life mattered, reminds me why and how I continue to do what I do.”
Thank you, LNPB, for saving sweet Boris and giving him love, support, compassion, and dignity during his final hours on earth. He died knowing that he was loved – and that his life mattered.
When Boris was first rescued, LNPB posted on its Facebook page that he was “eating food like it was going out of style, bless his heart.”
Bless your hearts, too, LNPB – each and every one of you who are involved with rescuing those who might otherwise be overlooked. Your work truly matters.
