“Aura Battler Dunbine” is a mecha series by the creator of “Gundam”, Yoshiyuke Tomino. Shou Zama was an ordinary motocross racer until he is dragged into the world of Byston Well via the Aura Road. He joins Drake Luft’s army and becomes an Aura Battler Pilot. An Aura Battler is a mecha that uses the pilot’s Aura energy in order to move it. An encounter with the American Aura Battler Pilot named Marvel Frozen gets him to realize that Drake Luft plans to take over Byston Well. He rebels against Drake and joins Neil Given’s group. Can they save the world of Byston Well from Drake and his army?
Adding mecha in the show may have been a good thing in the long run, as the fantasy element comes across as pretty generic. The mecha are really unique, with their insectile design and the fact that they’re powered by a person’s spiritual energy. The plot is okay, but a lot of the characters never get the chance to have their personalities be fully developed. They also missed a great opportunity to have Princess Emilie develop into a badass Aura Battler pilot. It’s understandable that the Mi Ferarrio want to destroy the Aura Machines, but dumping them all on Earth is morally questionable, especially since only the humans who were transported to Byston Well know about it. The animation is crude by today’s standards, but it’s competently done. Honolulu Yoshiyuke Tomino fans might want to check it out to watch on a rainy day.
