The church in the center of Hollywood with the tower and the big red ribbon is reaching over the Hollywood Hills and moving into the San Fernando Valley. Hollywood United Methodist Church is beginning to revive a long-fallow church site in Toluca Lake, Calif. in a charming location that has only been used as a filming site for the past few years since the church there disbanded.
The site of the church was the movie location for the 1994 Johnny Depp film “Ed Wood” directed by Tim Burton. At the site, Depp’s character (of Ed Wood) tried to convince the members of the church to invest in his film project, and the cast of the church ended up being in his horror classic “Plan 9 From Outer Space.”
The location at 4301 Cahuenga Boulevard has also alternately been home to a theater troupe, a comedy church and other charitable organizations.
This weekend, Rev. Kathy Cooper-Ledesma says she is gathering all neighbors and potential churchgoers to meet and greet her and the Hollywood United Methodist members. She says, “Help spread the Christmas Spirit and meet our new neighbors in Toluca Lake as we join together to do some good old-fashioned Christmas caroling! No previous experience required, just the desire to sing, make a joyful noise, and share in some fun and fellowship!”
It’s not an officially new church, it is a branch of the large Methodist Church in Hollywood. Membership waned at the church that was at the location, and now they will try to revive worshippers at the location.
Here is the schedule for the month and the launch:
ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS – SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6. Join the new team on Saturday, December 6 at 8 p.m. at the Toluca Lake Campus for our hugely popular, annual storytelling concert. Members of Hollywood UMC recall funny and poignant tales of Christmases past. Special musical guests will be there and a Christmas cookie reception follows.
SUNDAY EVENING ‘PREVIEW’ WORSHIP SERVICE @ TOLUCA LAKE – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7. The new campus will kick off a special Sunday evening worship service at 5 p.m. Former Hollywood UMC member Stephen Folds is scheduled to be the worship leader.
SHARKY’S DINNER AFTER WORSHIP. For newcomers and Hollywood members alike there is a dinner at the Sharky’s restaurant after the worship service on Dec. 7. There will be fun, fellowship and a little fundraising with a promise of “Great fun, great people and 15 percent of every purchase at the restaurant will go directly to the church.”
CHRISTMAS CAROLING IN TOLUCA LAKE – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14. The group will meet at 4 p.m. at the Toluca Lake Campus and head out around the neighborhood singing Christmas carols, and there will be a lyric sheet provided. No experience is necessary and there may be hot chocolate and hot apple cider when the choralers return back to church.
