Alana Thompson, or Honey Boo Boo, is 55 pounds overweight. Honey Boo Boo and her mother Mama June Shannon will appear on the Feb. 25 episode of “The Doctors.” Celeb physician Dr. Travis Stork is planning a medical intervention for the former reality TV stars of TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” Dr. Stork says Honey Boo Boo is morbidly obese and shows signs of dangerous inflammation. He says it’s diet or die early for Alana. Dr. Stork plans to help Honey Boo Boo and Mama June start a diet and hopefully ward off life-threatening consequences.
Honey Boo Boo, 9, is 4 feet. 9 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds. That’s nearly double what a girl her age should weigh (60-65 pounds). At her heaviest, Mama June tipped the scales at nearly 400 pounds. But by September 2013, Shannon had lost over 100 pounds. She followed a “ketogenic” low-carb diet. Shannon claimed then that Honey Boo Boo had lost 12 pounds of baby fat– her “Toddlers and Tiaras” claim to fame. Alana was dropping a few pounds at every doctor’s appointment and her size 12 clothes were too big, said Shannon.
But after the show’s cancellation, it appears Honey Boo Boo is putting on weight again. This time it’s not cute baby fat. It’s the stuff that going to stay if she doesn’t mend her ways. At nine, she’s not likely hit puberty yet. When she does, hormonal changes can help shed baby fat. But if the diet is poor, kids miss puberty weight loss windows and just move right to adult obesity.
The Thompson-Shannon family is known for loving junk food, southern-fried and lots of it. In her pageant days, Mama June weaned Alana on go-go juice (Mountain Dew and Red Bull) and “pageant crack” (Pixie Stix). Alana admits she loves fried foods and sweets. Her preference combines both: deep-fried Oreos.
Mama June cared enough to lose weight herself, but not enough to get Alana on board. Now Shannon says she doesn’t care if she loses anymore weight. She’s managed to keep off what she lost, but is still obese. If she doesn’t take her own weight seriously, doctors hope June will wake up to her daughter’s obesity. But knowing June, she’ll just blow it off as part of the redneck stereotype.
Shannon lost over 100 pounds, without drugs, surgery or going to the gym. So she certainly has the willpower. Now if she will just turn it toward helping her daughter slim down. It sets a good example for other children when they see celebs taking health seriously. Reality stars are fast-becoming bigger celebs than actors or musicians!
