It’s Spring and that means it’s prom time! If you’re looking for something fun to do at school to get everyone in “prom mode” then consider hosting a pre-prom fashion show at your school. Here’s how to make it happen.
Whether it’s a teacher or principal get at least one adult involved. Let them know you wish to host a pre-prom fashion show at school, and, present an outline of how, when, and where it will take place. Chances are they’ll like the idea and give you approval to do it.
Form A Committee
Whether you want to keep it “closed” (for example your school’s cheerleaders) or open to everyone is something that should be discussed with your adult supervisor. Explain why you believe having just a certain group or why everyone should be involved in the project. Then form your committee who will help come up with a theme; get sponsors; and, coordinate the show.
Unless you or your parents are extremely well connected forget trying to get a major department store involved with your prom fashion show. Instead, approach smaller, boutique stores and offer free or low cost advertising in the prom show program in exchange for them lending the garments for your fashion show.
We all know how catty high school can be and it’s not fair to include someone because of size, shape or “coolness” factor. Be sure your fashion show is INCLUSIVE. You’ll get better results as far as turn out if everyone has someone they know or can relate to on the run way. So in addition to the skinny, popular girls and guys, also have one or two plus size models, and, if possible someone physically challenged as a model as well. Don’t forget, it’s their prom too!
How to Stage a Runway
Setting up a Runway isn’t hard. If you’re using your school’s cafeteria or gymnasium then simply line chairs up on each side to form an aisle. No special equipment is needed.
Music for the Runway
Music is essential for the runway, but, select music that isn’t competing with the fashions. It can be current music, just not overly loud and nothing offensive.
Advertising and Tickets
To help off-set costs such as insurance or a DJ to play music sell low cost advertising to local businesses, and, any extra money raised by advertising and ticket sales can be put towards the cost of prom which will lower the price for students attending.
The only thing stopping you now is you. So go for it and have a great time playing model and fashion show producer!
