For years, we’ve all been warned about the danger of becoming a “couch potato” and sacrificing our health to that ginormous flat screen TV in our living room.
Now there is direct scientific evidence that indicates prolonged daily television viewing increases the risk of developing diabetes by over 3%. That may not seem like a significant amount, but it will have harmful effects on your health.
This current study examined the effects that “sitting time” had on diabetes risk. The research included over 3,200 overweight adults in the United States, ages 25 years or older.
The authors investigated the impact of sedentary behavior over time on diabetes occurrence.
The results were shocking. They stated, “For participants the risk of developing diabetes increased approximately 3.4% for each hour spent watching TV.”
Times have changed. Gone are the days when we used to have to force kids to come inside for dinner and stop playing with their friends.
We now live and raise children in a world that focuses on technology, video games, television and sedentary activities. So it should come as no surprise that there are serious consequences with an inactive lifestyle.
The problem is all this inactivity is killing us slowly. There is simply no debate. To enjoy a lifetime of good health, you will have to find a way to move and stay active.
The trick is to find an activity that keeps you motivated.
- Some people love the solitude of running along a trail or river, but this outdoor pastime can always be done as a family or group event
- Others stay motivated with structured circuit courses, Spinning classes or dance lessons
- Kids and grown-ups who enjoy socializing always find fun in a team sport like soccer, a softball league or basketball pick-up game
- Paddle boarding or surfing is exercise that connects with nature and can involve the entire family
Do everything you can for you, your kids and even your parents to decrease time sitting in front of the television set. Getting off the couch or out from behind your desk more frequently can guarantee a healthier life now and in the future.
