‘Je Suis Charlie! The terrible and devastating terror attacks that occurred last week in Paris, France have had a huge impact on the West. Yes, lives were sadly cut short. Families are grieving. For anyone that knew any of the deceased, including the terrorists, their lives are permanently changed forever. Yet, there are some positive effects that this tragedy has had on the world.
Western Society has woken up. For any nation, or citizen in the Western world who previously believed that they were somehow shielded from this global jihad against Western society, they have now become aware and alert. The leaders of over forty countries joined the march on the streets of Paris last Sunday, along with millions of French citizens to proclaim their solidarity against Islamic terrorism and their support of freedom of expression in the West.
Many countries have stepped up their investigations into possible terror cells, and at least ten future attacks have been foiled this week in just Belgium alone. The world is looking at this with a more proactive approach.
In the United States, where we are usually divided quite heatedly along party lines, we are coming together with a renewed solidarity to protect our freedoms that we hold so dear. This is evident throughout social media. The political pundits, both liberal and conservative alike, are beginning to see eye to eye on this as well. When Bill Maher starts to sound like Sean Hannity, it is evident that the winds of change are here.
Unfortunately, the Charlie Hebdo publication has angered Muslims around the world with its sacrilegious images of the prophet. Protests are occurring around the Muslim world as of this writing. Even though one can understand that it is an insult to their prophet, Charlie Hebdo has made it a habit to insult just about every major religion. They will likely continue in that fashion. In allowing free speech and freedom of expression, unfortunately one may hear things that are offensive.
There is a sense that Islamic terror cells are amping up their game. With ISIS being so proficient in social media, lone wolf sympathizers are taking matters into their own hands in various parts of the globe. It is essential that the general public stay aware and vigilant in order to save lives.
There is a renewed sense of American patriotism and pride in American exceptionalism. Americans are not afraid to live their lives simply because of the threat of Islamic terror cells and lone wolf attacks.
As the world joins in this global war on terror, friendships between allied nations are renewed and new alliances will be made. Some of these alliances will be surprising, but necessary in order to one day put a stop to Islamic terror.
In closing, remember to remain vigilant and stay informed. In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King in celebration of his birthday, let us dream to overcome this world crisis with our allies across the globe. ~ Until next time, God Bless America! ~ Traci Otake, Los Angeles Political Examiner
