How does an over weight but energetic, not old but not young, well spoken but often misunderstood, arrogant yet humble, hip-hop artist from Detroit fit in with the current trends and standards in popular rap music?… He doesn’t. He fucking stands out. Meet Hugo Biggs!!! A twenty something year old rhyme slinger from Detroits westside, Joy Road area. Starting his musical career at 16 after recieving his high school diploma, he forfeited his families aspirations of him becoming a huge successful engineer, doctor, or lawyer, to pursue a career in music!!… As cliche as the story sounds the guy actually has a unique charm to him once you meet him and kick it with him. Honestly, he wins you over with his passion for his craft and professionalism, before you even hear him kick a flow. What can we say about his music though?… Absolutely phenomonal!!! And that’s putting it mildly. Hugo ventures into realms with his music that other artists wouldn’t dare go. Instead of being conscerned with his street credibility, sex appeal, or… (ughh…) swag?.. His lyrical wit, focused aggression, and fluctuating bravado is what ties his package as an artist together. His fearlessness is the core trait that drives his musical decision making. When it comes to his beat selection, you can hear that the man aims to pack out stadiums and arenas one day. The way he forges songs for the picky and finicky music listeners of the world is unearthly. He has the ability to seemlessly blend hip-hop with any other genre of music and though this may sound like a simple feat, having an artist with the tenacity, skill, and ingenuity to carry the perposterous until it breaks down a social barrier, is a definite asset. No other artist can actually win over fans like Hugo. You may not like hip-hop or rap music, but you just might after listening to Hugo Biggs. And this is a rapper we’re talking about!! Or is it?… No, Hugo Biggs is more than just the average rap act, he is a monument to walking contradictions and outliers everywhere. Everything you’d expect to hear from a Detroit artist, he tears down that image and paints something new and exciting. A true chameleon, his rhymes are able to blend in with the emotion of a set piece of music and that paired with bushido like precision of his penmanship, creates a robust feeling of introspection for every song. The level of depth he brings to the tracks he graces is equivalent to a movie written by Tarantino and directed by Scorsese with a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and The RZA (somewhere some movie buff out there thinks that would be a terrible combination… well fuck you. That shit sounds awesome.) Rapper, writer, and lifelong student, Hugo Biggs is striving to jumpstart his indie career and looks forward to working with not only his peers, but people from different walks of life. With a passion for classic video games, anime, and hip-hop, he non chalantly glides his way towards his ultimate goal. Winning a Grammy and an Oscar at the same damn time. Sounds far fetched, but seeing as he has the uncanny ability to take a crazy idea and make it sound not only sane but also feasible, lyrically he seems to be a man well suited for the task. Describing himself as a “musical mercenary” the de facto leader of a clandestine collective of artists and independent thinkers, The Dead Rebels Society, he works tirelessly to further the organizations goals through frequent collaboration with various artists. Those goals however, remain a mystery. With everything Hugo has going for him, you would think, he’d be already successful and famous by now. But no success story is truly ever ‘overnight.’ Your catching him in his humble beginnings. Truth of the matter is, he’s broke and hasn’t met the right people yet. Maybe its you he needs to meet… So reach out and say “What up doe, Huuuuugo!!!!” I bet you he responds with an awkward yet controlled laugh and a demeanor reminscent of an ice cold brew/ bottle of wine (pending on your gender.) Gearing up to promote for his very first project, BrokeSummerNightsLiveFromTheWestsideofDetroit, it can be said that the pictures he paints with his music are so vivid, all you have to do is listen to watch it unfold. Welcome to Motown, through the eyes and words of a brash yet sharp minded survivor of the times.
