Mysterious and massive is a way to describe this black hole in space that has been identified and is at least 12 billion times more massive than our sun. This immense black monster is actually still a “young” black hole according to scientists which has given it the number one spot of all time in black holes.
Now this might seem quite amazing considering its size, but the light that emits from the “black hole” that we are just now being able to see is actually 900 million years old, which creates the “young” black hole tag for this enormous stellar luminous disc.
The notorious “black hole” is “a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.” And as NASA would explain, “A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out, people can’t see black holes”
“With their immense gravity, black holes are constantly sucking in gas and other materials from nearby. This process heats up the gas so much that it emits intense energy and thermal radiation that’s unbelievably bright.” And it was with this light that researchers were able to measure the size of the young but immense black hole.
The researchers from the Peking Skylab used the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, The Two Micron All-Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Field Explorer.
“This luminous energy is known as a quasar, and it can hold many clues about the black hole harboring within. “Using spectroscopy we can detect the emission of light surrounding black holes, then we can use the properties of this gas and the distance of this gas to estimate the mass of the black hole,” Xue-Bing Wu, the lead researcher on the Naturestudy, tells Popular Science.”
This black hole has been growing at a constant, steady rate for quite some time already, and the researchers are quite amazed at its size and duration. Most of the time the energy that is created and released by the black hole will actually slow down its growth rate and eventually cause its end, but this is not the case with this black hole; it has been growing at a steady pace which has probably given it the extra life expansion needed to get to the size it’s at now.
But the scientists tell us we do not need to fear this black hole, as it will not be consuming the earth as it is too far away.
Certainly hope this black hole stays 12.8 billion miles away!
