In the very first verse of the Bible in Genesis chapter one we have what is the beginning of the universe and the first heavenly body to be put in this universe is the earth. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
“In the beginning” tells us that time was created first by God. There is no time with God. He is in the eternal present. He created time for His ultimate creation : man (Adam). Time is unique. It cannot be seen. It can only be measured by clocks, watches, etc. Time is a mystery to man even to this day. Life span of animals and man vary. The life span of man was once almost a thousand years. The oldest living recorded human was Methuselah at 969 years ( Genesis 5:27). The life span of man is now about only 70 years (Psalm 90:10) by the grace of God. Some animals today can live to 120 years such as the Galapagos Tortoise. Some insects have only a life span of a few days. But time as we know it did not start with a big bang over billions upon billions of years ago. Time started by God recently, say about 6,000 years ago.
“God created the heaven and the earth” tells us that there was no big bang in the beginning but that God created the heaven (universe) and the earth. This earth was still unformed and void because God did not start His creative processes on it yet. But each day of creation (Genesis 1:1-31) added things to the earth to make it inhabitable for living things (Isaiah 45:18). Creation only took six twenty-four hour days to complete.
The earth that God created was made for a special purpose. Earth was created for man. No other planet in our solar system has life on it. No other planet in our solar system has an atmosphere that can support biological life. God created life on the earth only! Not Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (not consider a planet any more). These planets are either extremely hot or extremely cold, with atmospheres that are so deadly that a man could not survive for a second without a spacesuit or spacecraft. Man breathes oxygen which these planets do not have if any for man to breathe. Even Mars with its atmosphere has no oxygen but carbon dioxide which is deadly to man. Also the radiation from the the sun and outer space is deadly on Mars, unlike the protection we have on earth from the sun’s radiation and cosmic rays. The earth’s magnetic field and ozone layer protects us on earth from these deadly forms of radiation.
To set the matter straight the earth is not the center of the solar system, the Sun is. But the earth is the center of the universe. Everything was created after the earth was created. God created the earth first. We need to give God the glory and thanks for our home in the vastness of space that He created. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11).
