In This Moment performed at The Rave last Wednesday night Nov. 12 and the band brought with them brand new music and a Vegas-inspired concert to the legendary Milwaukee music venue. The band, Maria Brink on vocals, Chris Howorth on guitar, Travis Johnson on bass, Randy Weitzel on guitar and Tom Hane on drums, is set to release a new album on Atlantic Records on Nov. 17 that they’ve titled “Black Widow,” a theme that played out visually onstage Wednesday night with huge success.
“Black Widow” is the follow up to their highly acclaimed album “Blood” that saw In This Moment chart on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs with a trio of hits, including “Whore,” “Adrenalize” and the title track “Blood,” which reached all the way to number 9. Their recent single, “Sick Like Me” is currently ranked at number 16 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart and rising after 8 weeks. The band recently released the audio for another new song, “Sex Metal Barbie,” and it’s one of the strongest songs the band has released in their career.
Maria Brink has risen to the forefront of powerful women in metal during the band’s career which now includes 5 full length albums. Brink’s avant garde stage performance and presence is a refreshing and invigorating display of the next level that melds the music and fan experience into a scintillating showcase unlike any other currently in the metal scene. In This Moment have found a way with their concerts to weave together their infectiously catchy metal music with an artistically guided stage show in a way that pushes boundaries, touches upon the taboo, cuts raw and deep to personal and emotional levels and refuses to conform to any previously established norms in the music business.
That’s perhaps one reason why In This Moment has continued to grow both their musical range and fan base over the years, and the two areas have been far from mutually exclusive. No band really grows without daring to step out of their comfort zone musically while trying different expressions that push the limits of what’s previously been a secure sound or method of music production, or what their fans have come to expect. In order for In This Moment to arrive at a song like “Sex Metal Barbie” they had to walk the fine line of originating a new start while breaking from the past, all the while honoring their intensely loyal fan base known as the “Blood Legion.”
And, as expected, the “Blood Legion” showed up in force last Wednesday night in Milwaukee and packed The Rave. Devoted fans lined up early and even came dressed the part. There were a few women who could have easily won a Maria Brink lookalike costume contest. It all added to the experience and it was exciting to see the dedication and devotion to the music because as much as you hear in the news about how the music business is dying, it was impressive to see just how vibrant and alive the music fandom can be in the metal scene.
In some ways In This Moment these days reminds me a bit of the best aspects of KISS, as ITM have become stylized over the past few tours. Travis has his hand made masks while Chris, Randy and Tom have their paint, and Maria has an ever-changing array of outfits and props that perfectly paint a visually coordinating image that associates to each song. The staging is one of the most impressive sets I’ve had the pleasure of photographing in some time. It should also be mentioned that In This Moment is perhaps one of the most photographer friendly bands on the road these days. Photographers in Milwaukee were allowed to shoot the entire concert from the photo pit.
In This Moment continues their tour throughout the next month, ending in California on Dec. 16 at the Fillmore Auditorium. To keep up to date with all things In This Moment you can like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and be sure to order a copy of their new CD “Black Widow,” which is also available on vinyl, and can be purchased at their official website.
