As advertised Saturday was a frigid and breezy day; mind you that the average high at Philly International Airport for late January is 41 while the average low is 26. We reached 29…..for an afternoon high after a low of just 14(it was in the single digits in the suburbs!). Despite that it was a beautiful day with lots of blue sky, but no one could really enjoy it unless they were forced to(mail delivery drivers, etc.).
Overnight will be another clear and cold night early with lows around that 15-degree mark, BUT then some higher clouds will begin to move in so this will “retard” that maximum radiational cooling and if anything temperatures may rise a couple of degrees toward morning(hey, we’ll take that!). Sunday will be mostly cloudy with possibly some light snow showers(or mixed with sleet) to the north and west of Center City by sunset. Highs will be in the middle 30s, but aloft there will be milder air working in; this is why overnight we can see some snow mixed with sleet changing over to rain by the morning commute with lows holding between 32-34 degrees. Right now I feel that possibly an inch or two of frozen precipitation(snow mixed with sleet; sleet takes up 3x’s more moisture than snow) before the changeover is possible, but we shouldn’t have to deal with major icing issues like they will to the north in Northern NJ and into New York City as temperatures will rise by mid-morning….
But here’s the kicker; in the afternoon once the low passes eastward a major Arctic blast will push in and temperatures will drop like a rock for the evening commute. This can lead to flash freezing and lots of accidents due to ice as anything frozen will freeze. Overnight lows Monday night will range from below zero in the suburbs to the single digits in Center City.
Tuesday we’ll barely reach 20 degrees despite plenty of sunshine, but then we’ll get in the upper 30s come Wednesday with increasing clouds; a quick-moving clipper system will provide some a light mix with sub-freezing lows, but behind the clipper temperatures will actually DROP through the 20s in the afternoon. Overnight Thursday could be even COLDER than Monday night with SUB-ZERO LOWS! Yikes!
We’ll be in the middle 20s for Friday afternoon with plenty of sunshine while Saturday may reach 40 with increasing clouds ahead of another system(see a trend/pattern here?).
