Las Vegas is the home to many talented writers, published and yet-to-be-published. Groups like Writers of Southern Nevada, Henderson Writers Group and Las Vegas Writers Group offer support and encouragement to those interested in the craft and business of writing. Here are just a few of the upcoming events in February.
February 8 WRITERS OF SOUTHERN NEVADA PRESENTS PAINTED STORIES
Writers of Southern Nevada launches Painted Stories, an event featuring 5 local writers reading their short stories accompanied by award-winning artist Mike Davies painting images he envisions in each story as the author reads. Painting will be for sale at the conclusion of the program.
This event is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Bootlegger Bistro, 7700 Las Vegas Blvd. South in the Vegas Room. Doors will open at 1 p.m. for guests who would like to arrive early for lunch. The event is free for Writers of Southern Nevada members and $10 for others. This is the first in a new mixed media series the group plans to present. Writers are invited to submit their work for possible future reading. January 30-May 1 LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE PLANS WRITERS EXPERIENCE COURSE
The Osher Lifelong Learning institute at UNLV plans to offer The Writers Experience, a course for seniors, slated to include one or two local authors reading from their work and participating in question-and-answer sessions, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Fridays Jan. 30-May 1 at the Paradise Campus of UNLV, 851 E. Tropicana Ave.
Your Las Vegas Writing Examiner, Morgan St. James, will be reading from the upcoming “Vanishing Act in Vegas,” the 3rd Silver Sisters Mystery, on March 20.

February 3 THE WRITER’S BLOCK PLANS GRAND OPENING
The Writer’s Block, the new 1020 Fremont St. downtown Las Vegas bookstore launched by Scott Seeley and Drew Cohen in November, is slated to celebrate its grand opening with events throughout the day Feb. 3. Festivities are set to begin with a ribbon cutting with local political leaders and food from Rachel’s Kitchen at 11 a.m. Promotions on inventory are planned from noon to 5 p.m. At 5 p.m. Seeley and Cohen are set to present at the Downtown Project’s Downtown Lowdown in The Learning Village, 727 Fremont St. Then the party is scheduled to finish up back at the bookstore with a celebration, with food to be provided from 6 to 9 p.m. by chef Natalie Young of Eat and the soon-to-open Chow. February 10-May 26 FREE CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS PLANNED AT GIBSON LIBRARY
A free Creative Writing @ Your Library series is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month starting Feb. 10 at the Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway. Writers 18 or older are encouraged to participate and share.
Members of the Henderson Writers’ Group will present workshop sessions on a variety of topics, including an introduction to creative writing on Feb. 10, poetry on Feb. 24, novels and short stories on March 24, memoirs on April 14, screenwriting on April 28, editing your own work on May 12 and publishing options on May 26.
