Legendary international film star and author Shane Briant recently wrote to his representative asking for help to end animal cruelty and dog fighting in Australia. Shane and his wife Wendy are both well known human and animal rights advocates.
Now, you would think, as someone who is famous around the world, both in film as well as the author of several bestsellers, that he would be respected. Especially since he’s a resident of Sydney, and is doing his best to help as an active animal advocate.
According to a change.org petition initiated by Shane, Senator David Ean Leyonjhelm, whom Shane contacted in his fight to end what is blatantly animal cruelty, Levonjhelm allegedly replied to this world famous man, “DILLIGAS.” According to the Urban Dictionary, dilligas means “I don’t give a s**t.”
Shane responded with the following message
“How dare you talk to Australian voters like that. You are a public SERVANT who should know his place. No one pays me – I am an author. More to the point, who is paying you, other than the Government)? Whether or not you are taking backhanders from the Greyhound “industry” is debatable. Maybe, maybe now. Who knows? Corruption is endemic in NSW. I have no agenda other than preventing cruelty to animals. You clearly do not care for the wellbeing of animals. Why you chose to become a vet eludes me – for the cash I expect.
As for annoying you I shall make it my business in future to make as many people as possible “annoy” you. Watch for campaigns about you on social media. You are about as politically savvy as Tony Abbott. With an election looming you choose to insult your voters?
Just received an email reply from Senator Leyonhjelm. I quote: “DILLIGAF.”
I presume this means something that ends with… “……GIVE A F**K”
One would think a representative of the Australian government would come up with a more civilized answer, whether he cares about dogs or not. To reply with only one word is an insult to animals and an insult to Shane Briant.
Shane began his Change.org petition a few days ago, which states his contact with Senator Leyonjhelm saying
“I emailed Senator Leyonjhelm raising issues about what he had said on the ABC 7.30 Report. He replied “DILLIGAS”. Translated it means ‘Do I look like I give a s**t.” (expletive altered as per Examiner policy). This man is a liberal senator not a child – he’s a servant of the state – yet this is how he privately talks to his constituents. PLEASE email your displeasure and quote the word he used – DILLIGAS. firstname.lastname@example.org”
David Ean Leyonhjelm is an Australian politician who is a Senator for New South Wales, representing the Liberal Democratic Party. Having been elected at the 2013 federal election, he took office on 1 July 2014. Prior to being elected to parliament, Leyonhjelm worked as a veterinarian and then as an agribusiness consultant. He also writes columns for several Australian publications, with a concentration on rural issues.
It’s sad that a former veterinarian would take such a callous approach toward animal abuse, especially since those who abuse animals more often than not go on to abuse people.
Please take a moment and sign Shane’s petition.
Excellent work Shane. Dogs in Australia really need protection, apparently from government officials, as well as abusers.
