Matt Alber is currently touring the Midwest. He already visited Chicago, St Louis, and Minneapolis. This weekend he will visit Madison, and Milwaukee, with Broadway singer Celisse Henderson.
This year saw the release of his album Wind Sand Stars, which includes a cover of Bob Dylan’s (or is that now considered Adele’s?) “To Make You Feel My Love”.
This is not new territory; Alber is know for his live covers of tracks like “Rocketman” by Elton, “Take a Bow” by Madonna, and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston.
The album also includes the very warm and fuzzy new single “Handsome Man”. The music video is on the list of best music this year. Also listen to “Spectacularly” and his ode to “New York City”.
The viral video has become quite popular with gay men. To no surprise, they make the largest portion of his audience.
When asked why queer hairy men gravitate to his music he says ‘They seem to dig my songs, so I am happy to sing for them. I guess I am one’. When asked whether he considers himself a bear, he added without hesitation ‘no, no, but I’m definitely bear-friendly’. Matt added that those in the community ‘are also big romantics’.
Does Matt consider himself a romantic? ‘Oh, yeah, I am very romantic.’
This can be seen and heard as he discusses his boyfriend, whom he met after the aforementioned video. In fact, the encounter was exactly as in the video: A man meets a man, they casually go out and spend the night together. Man cooks for man, man is smitten with man, then man and man begin a (now) long-distance relationship. Well, until after November 22nd, when he returns home to San Francisco to be together again.
