In true holiday spirit Whitney Jackson found herself standing in the halls of her home church (The New Macedonia Baptist Church) giving thanks to God for this remarkable moment that was about to unfold. Just on the other side of that door stood hundreds who’d packed the church out in support of her Release The Sound live recording project. The door swings open and she appears, heading to the stage where she leads a series of familiar praise and worship songs with fresh interpretations. This was very appreciated as most artists and groups nowadays are veering away from the praise and worship niche and headed for that ‘Pajamed’ out complex production studio nuance. This niche is perfect for Jackson however because her voice is suited for exaltation as well as worship chords. Her voice is also very sincere and honest which are also fading qualities among emerging gospel artists. After the recording Jackson was able to sit down for a brief interview.
When did you get the vision for this project?
Whitney Jackson: Around 2012 to the beginning of 2013. My bishop spoke a word into my life and said there was a sound in me that needed to be released and one morning after that I woke up and there was “Release the Sound”.
How was your relationship with God affected throughout this process?
Whitney Jackson: It has definitely brought me closer to God and it’s made me trust Him. It actually kind of made me like, “God I don’t want to do this anymore because this call is a big requirement it’s heavy.” And every time I tried to go left He [God] was like, “No, this is what we’re doing.” No matter what I even tried to make myself not do stuff.
And what do you think it was that was pulling into to do that?
Whitney Jackson: Fear, all my life I have dealt with it and even this morning I called Phil the producer and was like, “I’m not going.” He was like, “Put your clothes on, you’re going.” And even as I stood out there tonight night I was like this is unbelievable I still don’t believe this is happened, it’ll probably hit me when I get home.
How did the song selections come together?
Whitney Jackson: With Release the Sound, those are worship songs that I just love and I wanted to do. Now I created a lot of things, but Phil Bryant is our creative genius behind almost all of this. As a matter of fact, going back to that first event where you saw me. That’s where Phil also saw me, and I knew Phil already; I had done some background work for him with Crystal Aiken. He came to me after that event and said, “Whitney, I didn’t know, but you need to call me tomorrow.” And you know how people do that ‘conventional talk’, but he actually called me and was like, “I wasn’t playing with you what’s the hold up?” I was so scared, if it had been up to him this project would have been done over the summer. Mind you he’s talking to me back in January I had a gig around July-August and after that gig he came to me and said, “We’re doing a live recording.” I said, “Who’s doing a live recording?” he said, “We’re doing a live recording!” And here we are.
Just like on a television show or movie right after Jackson made that statement there’s a knock on the door. In walks the man himself. Phillip Bryant the visionary behind Writerz Blok Music Group, the full service management, music, production, and entertainment company of which Whitney Jackson is signed. And when asked what was it about Whitney that made her right for this project he replied:
“I like Whitney’s persistence, when we were talking, She wasn’t coming at me like everybody else to work with me, she was coming at me genuinely for advice about her career because she recognized that I was good enough in the industry to receive advice from. And a lot of people nowadays don’t do that. So we sat down and discussed how to go about doing this the right way because nowadays everybody’s interested in getting a Grammy Award, winning this or that, but she was clearly interested in how to start a successful career. And I just so happened to stop by this event and heard her sing and I knew then okay this girl is for real. She’s serious. I’m going to sign her and that was it because artists just don’t like to work these days.”
No they don’t, why work hard when nowadays they have a machine?
Phillip Bryant: Exactly.
So when is the projected release date for the project?
Phillip Bryant: We’re shooting for February-March, God is moving quick so it will be out soon.
