Pamela Christian is a quintessential example of a self-made Christian Apologist. Through rigorous study and self-training, Pamela has begun her own Apologetic ministry, and self-published her book Examine Your Faith: Finding Truth in a World of Lies, wherein she shares her studies and faith-finding for consumption of Christians and non-Christians alike. Her book has been endorsed by the likes of Josh McDowell, Dr. Craig Hazen and Dan Story; and Pamela has become a featured keynote speaker to both Christian and non-Christian audiences throughout the US.
What follows is an interview this writer recently conducted with Christian regarding her writing and her ministry:
You are a Christian author and speaker who regularly holds conferences on a wide variety of subjects related to Christianity and Apologetics. What began you on the course that led to this ministry?
I didn’t find the truth of Christ until I was nearly thirty years old. A major life crisis, which I share in my messages and books, revealed that the beliefs I’d based my life on were completely faulty. My world crashed in on me. In that place of utter despair, I remembered the Jesus I’d learned a bit about as a small girl when my parents allowed me to attend church with the neighbors. I cried out to Him willing for Him to be Lord of my life, if He could help me. Instantly I was swept into the Father’s presence. Without question my life transformed in an instant.
I knew there was a lot more I needed to learn. With a new found hope and passion, I devoured all Christian literature and radio I possibly could. At this time I discovered apologetics, which helped me become entirely convinced that Jesus is who He claimed to be.
Realizing that I had lived so many years of my life deceived, it became clear to me that many other people could be too. I wanted to be of help in any way I could. I attended Community Bible Study (CBS) where I was fed on rich, in-depth study of the Bible with materials created by well respected scholars. A few years later, through a set of circumstances, it became clear that God wanted me to start a new CBS class in a community where there was no class. To my surprise later, it was repeatedly confirmed that He wanted me to teach the class. The nearly seven years I taught were the most enriching of my walk. As you know, in order to teach, there is a great deal that must first be learned. I loved every bit of the learning, which inspired me to complete the course in Christian Apologetics with Biola University.
After about seven total years with CBS, most unexpectedly I began receiving invitations to speak and teach for various church groups across the country. These invitations were the catalyst that directed me to organize Pamela Christian Ministries. I’m still all about helping people discover and live in the same life-giving truth I’ve been blessed to find.
What would you consider to be your unique voice in the marketplace of ideas?
There aren’t nearly as many women who incorporate apologetics into their communication as men. Neither are there many Pentecostal Apologists of either gender. As a woman, Pentecostal Christian who uses apologetics, I think I have a distinct contribution to the marketplace of ideas.
I use apologetics to help under gird truth, while I intentionally stay as relatable as possible. I am not as highly educated as others and don’t ever want to pretend to be. And I think by intentionally not using a scholarly approach I can reach a different audience for Christ.
I am a conservative Pentecostal woman who uses apologetics in a non-scholarly way, who is very candid about my own life’s trials and successes, with a genuine heart of compassion and respect for those who are deceived and don’t know it. Knowing why we believe what we believe is essential, else we could be deceived and not know it.
There are a number of apologetics books on the market. What makes yours a worthwhile read?
Well, I’d have to defer to the comments from my endorsers and reviewers.
My first book in the Faith to Live By series is Examine Your Faith! Finding Truth in a World of Lies. It’s about what I call essential faith.World-renowned Author and Speaker Josh McDowell’s endorsement of it reads: “If you are not confident about what you believe, or what makes sense to believe, Examine Your Faith! will help you explore the popular faith claims of our day and discover life-giving truth.” Dan Story (M.A., Christian Apologetics, Author and Teacher) wrote, “Religious skeptics, spiritual seekers, or those who simply want to examine their faith to determine its legitimacy cannot read Examine Your Faith! without concluding that Christianity has no competitors.” And Craig J. Hazen, Ph.D. (Founder and Director, Graduate Program in Christian Apologetics, Biola University, Author of Five Sacred Crossings) wrote, “Examine Your Faith! is a wonderful introduction to both world religions and the special case for Christ. And it is perfect for group studies at churches everywhere.” It was Craig’s endorsement that caused me to quickly write a companion Study Guide!
All of the reviews posted on Amazon are most gratifying as each reader has expressed getting from the book the kind of life-impacting truth I’d hoped to impart, while writing it.
My second book in the series, Renew Your Hope! Remedy for Personal Breakthroughs, was just released in December 2014. This book is about effective faith. We have a lot of Believers filled to the brim with head knowledge. What we need more of are Christians who understand the spiritual reality of who we are in Christ. As I’ve said before, faith that moves mountains is something we can experience, if we understand how to wield effective faith. Effective faith is not “Word Faith” theology where a person seeks to declare what they want to occur in life. Rather, effective faith is “Faith Word” theology where Believers learn to trust God for His promises to occur in life. This book is endorsed by Charles H. Kraft, Ph.D. (Professor Emeritus, Fuller School of Intercultural Studies, Author and Speaker), by Dan Story who endorsed my first book and Bob Dutko, a Christian Apologist and Nationally Syndicated Talk-show Host.
Once again the reviews from readers posted on Amazon and elsewhere have been heart-warming as they are getting from my work the help and hope I want people to find.
The third book planned for this series is Revive Your Life! Rest for Your Anxious Heart! I plan to start it later this year. It will be about excellent faith. And if you’ve followed the template, what I’m offering in this series is greater consideration of God’s, faith, hope and love.
What are your future goals for your ministry?
I’d like to promote my books through media and personalities who have tremendous reach, confident that the message I bring is what the world needs today. I’d like to expand my speaking and teaching efforts and again host radio and even television. I’d like to partner with those who share my vision to reach as many people possible with the Gospel, believing that each one of us who is called to share the Truth will attract different individuals. That said, I’m confident there is an audience of people who will be blessed by the Truth message as I bring it.
I am a miraculous survivor of sudden cardiac arrest. I actually died and was revived. I experienced what I call the threshold of heaven and I now experientially know that faith in Christ is the only way to be rightly related to God the Father. Many think that the claim that faith in Jesus is haughty and exclusive. The truth is, it’s entirely inclusive because relationship with God the Father is open to anyone who personally chooses to place his/her faith in Christ. This is what I want to help people understand and embrace, because it impacts not only life on earth, but life after death.
