Randy Wood, Raleigh, NC
Where were you born?
Why did you start boxing?
I always got picked on and beat up as a kid. I started wrestling at age 14 and realized I had a hunger for competition. At age 18 I started working with boxers to learn basic stuff.
What did you do after you learned the basics?
Well, in 2009 I met Remy Fullwood who worked under an Olympic boxing coach and started training with him. He actually worked with Julius Fogle the former IBC super middleweight champ!
I was never good at sports until I found boxing and fell in love with it instantly.
What happened after you started training with Remy?
I trained daily for 2 years and wanted to start competitions, but had some personal issues I had to take care of first.
So, what did you do in the mean time?
I started bouncing at bars to make money.
Eventually, your personal issues got resolved. What happened afterwards?
I started training again and found that when I made boxing my focus, I not only did better with boxing, but at life in general.
When did you fight your first fight?
After I started training again, I had to have shoulder surgery and had no arm usage for 8 months! This was a huge setback and I had to start over and rebuild again.
As I was rebuilding, I started teaching boxing to kids at a local boxing gym.
In June 2013, I took part in my first boxing tournament. It was an action packed fight and there was a split decision.
What did you do after your first tournament?
In 2014, I started working with Remy at Jawbreaker boxing.
What do you do now?
I work at Jawbreaker, with Remy, the owner. I run the kids boxing program, teach 1 on 1 training (boxing) sessions and teach group boxing classes.
What is your advice for those who would like to start boxing?
Research boxing gyms in your area and work with someone who has fight experience.
Of course, if you live in the Raleigh, NC area, come see me at Jawbreaker Boxing!
Be prepared to make the commitment. Always remember WHY you started.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Here at Jawbreaker we have a bully campaign, it is called, “Stop bulling before it starts”. It teaches kids not to be a bully by teaching them self confidence and discipline. I teach them how to defend themselves in a non-animalistic manor. I also teach them to be a person of understanding.
What is something you live by?
You lose focus, you get hurt.
Thank you, Randy! You are truly an inspiration.
