This morning if you turned on “Washington Week” on PBS, or George Stephanopolos on ABC, you saw the same ongoing debate that has been circulating since the counter-terrorism summit that ended last week, namely, “Why won’t President Obama call it Islamic Terrorism?” For more on this story, see the following link-
Meanwhile, ISIS apparently does not care what name we give it, they are going ahead with their propaganda videos. One of the newest videos encourages people to blow up the Mall of America. ISIS has issued this as an open invitation to all, both those who have pledged their allegiance to the Islamic State, and to all others who simply want to wage Jihad against the western world. This video will also surely catch the eyes of disenfranchised youth who have never considered Islam before, but they are happy for once to not be the wallflower, but rather the one who is invited to the party.
In the propaganda video, ISIS shows a clip of another shopping mall that was destroyed by terrorism, (Oops, did I call it that? So sorry to offend, I mean an infidel gathering spot that was destroyed by righteous Jihad.) No matter what you call it, the ISIS spokesperson in the video whose face is covered by a Keffiyeh, informs his loyal audience that shopping malls have been bombed before, showing that it’s easy as pie, and subtly informing us all that if we only reach out, he will provide us with both the how-to-manual and the means to carry out the attack.
The management of the Mall of America has been aware that it has been a prime security target since it was built in 1992. The largest shopping mall in the United States, the mall also contains all of the well-known retailers and brand names who unabashedly proclaim that capitalism is thriving and crass- consumerism is king. Add the patriotic name of the mall and you have created the terrorist’s dream-target.
Ironically, this is one of those situations where ignorance is bliss, and that ignorance may actually thwart the plan of terrorists. Terrorists are focused on instilling a constant state of fear in their enemies, thereby controlling our lives and subduing us. If we are all so afraid of leaving out houses that we sit in a corner and cower in fear, they have won. It doesn’t even have to apply to the entire population. If even one-third of Americans become fearful of threats such as this and respond by changing their shopping habits, it could be enough to crush our already struggling economy.
That is why the day after 9/11, President George W. Bush advised us to go out shopping. While many of us were glued to the television set around the clock, waiting for the newest gruesome discovery, others chose to ignore the situation and continue on with their lives as if nothing had happened.
For this author, this seeming lack of compassion seemed both ignorant and irreverent of the biggest tragedy to occur on our soil since the United States was founded. But in retrospect, the fact that many Americans went on with their lives as if nothing had happened was one of the things that helped our country to survive. Evidently the lesson here is the very one that members of ISIS and all terrorists, do not want to hear; It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round.
