Tonight brings New Year’s Eve and the end of the year. And a fine year it was, I must say. Although it should be noted that whatever are fluctuating fortunes from annum to annum it doesn’t change the fact that life — and, more specifically, our lives — marches on toward its inevitable conclusion. I am reminded always of Tom Stoppard’s words from “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.”
“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”
Ah, well. Happy New Year to my readers.
And if you’re looking for a worthy resolution for 2015 consider getting more involved with the Northern California jazz and blues scene. These fine, indigenous forms of music are nothing less than a national birthright that far too many Americans ignore, to their social-cultural detriment and to ours.
JazzWest.com has the proper spirit, as noted on its website.
JUST UPDATED FOR THE NEW YEAR! We’re ready for 2015 with a calendar full of jazz here in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area: more than 1,000 2,500+ chances to catch a live jazz performance any night of the week. Whether it’s swing, bebop, big band, trade jazz, creative improv or just a bit of dinner jazz at more than 500 local venues, we’ve got you covered…
As we enter our 15th year celebrating the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene, we’re hoping to expand our online coverage with more live performance and CD reviews, along with articles and blogs exploring the region’s rich and storied jazz scene, past and present. The ideal contributor will have:
Familiarity with the Northern California jazz scene
Some experience writing CD or performance reviews, artist profiles, trend pieces and similar content (for either print or online publications)
Dedication to delivering quality work
Ability to meet assigned deadlines
Interested? Drop us a note and tell us what — and why — you’d like to write for us!
We’re also interested in working with local photographers to continue our mission of chronicling the Bay Area and Northern California jazz scene. Peruse our online photo galleries, and let us know if you’d like to showcase your photos on JazzWest. We’re looking to expand our coverage of Bay Area clubs and other venues, especially places that present local musicians on a regular basis, so there are plenty of great opportunities to expand your photographic portfolio and share your work with thousands of jazz fans.
