NASCAR’s top three series visit Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, with the Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity Series racing Saturday and the Sprint Cup Series racing on Sunday. Joe Gibbs Racing returns to the track with three Xfinity Series teams and four Cup Series teams, along with a new face behind the wheel of the No. 18 Crispy M&Ms Toyota Camry.
David Ragan has been named the interim driver of the No. 18 while Kyle Busch recuperates from his injuries suffered at Daytona. Ragan has 12 Cup Series starts at Atlanta, with a best finish of eighth in fall 2008.
Denny Hamlin, in the No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota on Sunday, has six top 10 finishes in 15 races at the 1.54-mile track, including a win in 2012. Hamlin finished third in the fall race at Atlanta.
Matt Kenseth, in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota, has 15 top 10 finishes at Atlanta, with a best finish of second twice – spring 2010 and 2014 (Atlanta hosted two events through the 2010 season). Kenseth will also be in the No. 20 Reser’s Find Foods Toyota Camry in Saturday’s Hisense 250 Xfinity Series race. He has two wins and nine total top 10 finishes in 12 starts in the series at Atlanta.
Carl Edwards, who was a former teammate of Ragan’s at Roush Fenway Racing, will drive the No. 19 ARRIS Toyota in Sunday’s race. Edwards has three Atlanta wins and 11 total top 10 finishes at the track, with a fifth-place finish in 2014.
Daniel Suarez and Erik Jones will join Kenseth in the Xfinity Series race, with both of those young drivers doing double duty as well – they’ll also race in the Truck Series race for Kyle Busch Motorsports following the Xfinity Series race. Saturday marks the first races at Atlanta for both drivers, with Suarez in the No. 18 ARRIS Toyota and Jones in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota, subbing for Busch.
Qualifying for the Xfinity Series Hisense 250 takes place at 9:10 a.m. ET, followed by the green flag at 2 p.m. ET. The Sprint Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 goes green Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
