A 9-LP boxed set of John Lennon’s eight solo studio albums, entitled “Lennon” will be released June 9, 2015, it was announced by Capitol/UMe today, April 21, 2015. This will be an exciting release for collectors and fans; the albums have been remastered from their original U.K. analogue master recordings and newly cut to vinyl from 96k digital files. The set will be produced on heavyweight, 180-gram vinyl and include perfect replicas of the original album art. In addition, LPs will be available for sale individually on August 21.
The individual albums in this collection are all out-of-print worldwide on vinyl, with the exception of “Imagine” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll” previously issued as remasters. John’s body of solo work was remastered in 2010 and released in a CD box set (see below). This new set, “Lennon” is the first time John Lennon’s complete collection of solo studio albums has been released on vinyl. The 2010 remastering process was done by Yoko Ono and a team of engineers in New York and London. (Allan Rouse, Abbey Road Studios in London, George Marino, Avatar Studios in New York.) The new vinyl masters were cut at Abbey Road Studios, and manufactured at one source world-wide, a German company called Optimal Media. This is an important detail for collectors who had issues with varying quality of LPs in past re-issues, when multiple companies were used.
Original artwork in each album is also being reproduced to the finest detail, including album covers and inner sleeves. Anything else that was included in the original albums has also been replicated. For example, “Imagine” contains reproductions of the two postcards, poster and inner bag that the original album offered. The same is true for “Some Time In New York City,” “Walls and Bridges” “Mind Games,” “Double Fantasy” and “Milk and Honey.” Collectors will be thrilled to see the fold-over flaps in “Walls and Bridges” with John’s childhood drawings, and the 8-page booklet, since the artwork was changed when the last CD remaster was issued of the album.
The vinyl box set is priced at $199.98 and is available for pre-order. Be sure to watch the official trailer included here.
