Joni Mitchell does not want Taylor Swift to play her in a biopic. In fact, Mitchell made her feelings known about the pop singer in a recent interview, and it is clear that Mitchell does not have a very high opinion of Swift or her talent. Us Weekly shared Mitchell’s comments about Taylor Swift on Nov. 26.
Rumors about the possibility of Taylor Swift taking on the role of Joni Mitchell in a biopic first popped up in 2012, but the project has been on a holding pattern since then. The biopic would be based on the novel “Girls Like Us” written by Sheila Weller. The biography tells the story behind the careers of Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell.
Taylor is a big fan of Joni Mitchell and her work, and she was excited for the opportunity to star in the film as the iconic singer. However, Joni didn’t want to have Taylor involved in the project at all. In the Sunday Times interview, she said the following about Taylor Swift portraying her in the film:
“I squelched that. I said to the producer, ‘All you’ve got is a girl with high cheekbones.'”
However, Mitchell was not impressed by the content of the biography either. She expressed her unhappiness with the content of the work in the interview as well. She said the following:
“It’s just a lot of gossip, you don’t have the great scenes. There’s a lot of nonsense about me in books. Assumptions, assumptions, assumptions.”
Taylor has not spoken out about Joni’s comments or the lost opportunity to star as her in the biopic since the project was first announced, but she has spoken out about the singer several times in interviews. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Taylor said the following about Joni Mitchell:
“When I first started drinking — when I was like 21 — I used to cry about Joni Mitchell all the time after a few glasses of wine. All my friends would know, once I started crying about Joni Mitchell, it was time for me to go to bed.”
Swift also revealed that Mitchell’s 1971 album release, titled “Blue,” was the album she played until she wore it out. It is clear that Taylor is a fan of Mitchell’s, but Mitchell does not share the sentiment in return. Taylor was asked about the planned biopic, but she would not speak much about it. News Oxy shared her comments:
“That’s actually not confirmed … I wish I could say it’s confirmed! But the thing about movies that I’ve learned is — I’ve been reading scripts for five years, and you just don’t know what ones are going to get greenlit and which ones aren’t, so I can’t talk about it unless it’s the real thing.”
Taylor is very much a singer at this time. She has been seen in two small roles on the big screen. She appeared in 2010’s “Valentine’s Day” and “The Giver.” However, she is not an established actress yet. However, she has looked at taking on more acting roles. Swift spoke about a possible acting career in 2012, according to E! Online:
“I would love to sign on to do a movie if it was the right role and if it was the right script, because I would be taking time away from music to tell a big grand story, and spend all of my time and pouring all of my emotions into being someone else. So, for me to do that, it would have to be a story worth telling.”
Right now, Taylor is busy with her music. She performed her latest single “Blank Space” live on the American Music Awards earlier this week, and she is getting ready to kick off her next concert tour. Starting in May, Swift will head out for 65-date concert tour.
What do you think of Joni Mitchell’s comments about Taylor Swift? Do you agree with her assessment of Taylor’s talent? Is it right of Mitchell to judge Taylor’s talent as an actress when Taylor has not done much acting yet? It is hard to know if Taylor could succeed as an actress without a proper role to show off what she is capable of doing. Fans of Swift will have to wait and see Taylor tackle acting once she is not so busy with music.
