Kai finds a home: New digs for dog left in train station after scam backfires

by zoom dune

Do you remember the sad photo of the abandoned dog tied to the handrail at a train station with a suitcase sitting next to him? That photo was posted online last month of Kai the dog after he was the victim of an Internet sale gone bad. The poor pooch was abandoned and left without a home and although he looked alone and forgotten, many wanted to make him their pet.

Kai’s forlorn expression while sitting in Scotland’s Ayr Train Station prompted offers to adopt this dog from across the globe. The Scotsman reports on Feb. 4 that “Kai won’t be going to New York, Los Angeles or Paris,” he has a new home in East Renfrewshire in Newton Mearns living with Ian Russell.

Russell, 54, was the person picked to take Kai home from the hundreds of people who made offers to adopt the abandoned dog. This hydraulic engineer was “heart-broken” over the recent death of Mica, a dalmatian, which was his own dog that died at the end of last year.

“I’m over the moon and very shocked that I was chosen out of everyone who wanted him,” said Russell. He shares that he is not a man who usually believes in fate, but this time around he believes there was something at work to bring him together with Kai.

Today it feels like it was “fate” that allowed him to bring Kai home, said Russell. His dog Mica was his best friend for 15 years and “she was the apple of my eye,” said Kai’s new owner.

According to BBC News today the Scottish SPCA is still investigating the circumstances that led Kai to be abandoned. Kai ended up at the station with a suitcase filled with all of his favorite things, like his water and food bowl, his pillow and toys. A woman and her daughter went to the train station to meet a man who was selling the dog online, according to CNN News.

Because the dog was not at all like the picture that was advertised, she asked if she could take the dog for a walk to get to know the pet a bit. The man agreed, but wanted a security deposit so she didn’t just take off with the dog. She handed the man money and he took off in his car and never returned.

She said that she panicked and left the dog tied to the rail at the station. The woman did come forward to tell her story to the authorities once Kai’s picture was posted in the media. The SPCA took custody of Kai with the goal of finding the good natured and kind dog a home.

That is just what they did and Russell is one happy camper today that Kai is now all his. The said story of a dog abandoned and all alone at a train station has one very happy ending today.
