For 100 years, Kansas City’s historic Union Station served as a Mecca for travelers as trains pulled in and out of the station, but even beyond that, the station served as a meeting place and host to many activities, including New Year’s celebrations under the clock by the main hall to the waiting room.
This year serves as a continuation of the proud tradition of Union Station with a New Year’s Eve party, complte with the Dave Stephens Band providing the music for the extravaganza, a Union Station spokesman said. The evening begins at 8p.m. and continues until the revelers depart at 1 a.m. Union Station bills the event as New Year’s Swingin’ Eve— an evening of live music and entertainment, dancing, food and celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Union Station invites all of KC is invited to come for that infectious Gatsby-era, big band, swing jazz, and dance the night all the way into the new year. According to the spokesman, the all-inclusive ticket includes: admission, live music and entertainment, party favors, hot appetizers and midnight champagne to toast the new year; unlimited drink option is also available. Highlights of the evening include:
Under the Clock-Tail Hour, with cocktails begins with appetizers and a DJ. This part includes swing dance lessons for first timers or brush up lessons for those seasoned swing dancers, the station said.
“Early discount tickets are available for purchase now through Saturday, Dec. 20, at $100 for a pair and $165 for an unlimited drink pair. Single tickets are also available for purchase at $60 and $90 for an unlimited drink ticket,” a press release stated. “Union Station’s Sprint Festival Plaza will come alive and transform into a vibrant setting for the ultimate swing music and dance experience. Cohost of KSHB-TV’s KC Live, Joel Nichols, will emcee the evening.

The Dave Stephens Band specializes in high-energy, vintage jazz, and all forms of big band dance, a spokesman for Union Station said. This modern incarnation of the big band has collected numerous awards and honors since its creation in the legendary jazz clubs of Kansas City. The band features a collection of world class musicians, and the band’s repertoire fuses unique interpretations of early 20th century American classics with Stephens’ original compositions.
