It can not be overstated that pregnancy is not a time to over eat. Pregnancy is a time to be as healthy as you can be. Weight gain is expected. Suggested healthy weight gain is between 25 and 35 pounds depending on the females starting weight. If she is under weight at conception then obviously gaining a little more is acceptable. However, if a woman begins her pregnancy already over weight, then it is expected that she should not gain as much.
A large determining factor in weight gain during pregnancy is whether a the expectant mother is able to stay active. Her diet is also a huge factor and also most important in the health of her unborn child.
Even in this modern age it is still difficult to shake the myth that a woman is eating for two, when in actuality she only needs an extra 300 calories a day. It can not be stressed that weight gained during pregnancy is only easily shed if it is not excessive, if it is weight mainly associated with the pregnancy, otherwise a woman is left with much more to lose than the recommended 25-35 pounds which is very difficult to achieve with a new, needy baby in the home.
Reading labels is a hassle, but this practice could be very helpful in determining what to eat and what not to eat. It could be very eye opening as well to realize that when we think we are making healthy choices we may not be. Eating at home is not as challenging because you have the ability to prepare your own food adding or omitting what you want. You are in control. It is however much more difficult when eating out. Sometimes the obvious healthy choice is not so healthy. Do not be deceived. It is now easier than ever to determine the healthy choices at fast food restaurants because they now have to list calorie content. If it is not listed on the screen upon ordering it can be provided by request or you can look it up ahead of time online.
In some cases a salad or wrap is heavier in calories than a burger on a white bun. Grilled does not always mean low calorie or low fat. It is surprising to discover that a Whopper Jr. with cheese from Burger King (350 calories) is lower in calories than an Original Chicken Sandwich from Chik-Fil-A (440 calories). So don’t guess. Check it out so that you are not accidentally sabotaging all your good efforts. And in the event you are not yet making an effort, change gears quickly and start taking notice. It may not seem like a lot now, but when that little bundle of joy arrives and you realize that she was not 65 pounds at birth…you will be the one left with the unwanted weight. The more that is left over upon delivery the harder it is to get back down.
