Kim Richards, star of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” checked into rehab for substance abuse shortly after walking out on an alcoholism intervention staged by Dr. Phil McGraw. Sources told TMZ Richards will stay at a live-in facility in Malibu, California, for “as long as it takes” to recover.
Kim had initially refused to go to rehab but changed her mind amid pressure from Bravo executives, who are requiring her to seek help and get regular drug testing if she wants to continue starring on the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”
The reality show is a major chunk of Richards’ income, so it’s critical she does not violate the show’s sobriety clause. “Her sobriety clause is going to include drug testing – both set and random,” a source told Radar. “They are also demanding that she go to treatment, either in-patient or out-patient. If she wants to remain on the show she will need to go and get some help.”
Kim Richards, who earns six figures from the “RHOBH,” previously said she loves the fan attention she gets from starring on the hit TV show. Ironically, Kim had also claimed being on the show made her “feel important” because she wanted to be a sobriety role model.
Kim, who will appear on the April 28 episode of the Dr. Phil Show, stormed off during an intervention Dr. Phil had arranged, where three of her four adult children were present.
Richards became enraged after McGraw suggested her alcoholism was making her a bad parent. “Are you living a lie telling everyone, ‘I’ve been sober for three years’?” Dr. Phil asked. “You are drunk in a bar, fighting with a cop, that is not good mothering.”
A furious Richards fired back, “Is this an intervention? I’m sorry, I can’t,” before walking off (see video). Before storming off on Dr. Phil, Kim admitted she felt guilty for drinking shortly before getting arrested April 16.
“I’m beating myself up over this,” Richards told Dr. Phil. “I poured a drink of vodka, and I thought ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’”
Kim’s Alcoholism Has Been Her Major Storyline for Four Seasons
Kim has struggled with alcoholism for years, and went to rehab for alcoholism and substance abuse in 2011. On April 16, Richards was arrested at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel at 1:30 a.m. local time amid complaints about her drunken behavior.
Sources said Kim locked herself in a bathroom and refused to come out. Richards, 50, “was displaying symptoms of alcohol intoxication including slurred speech and belligerent insolent behavior, cursing at the officers and passively resisted arrest,” according to a police statement posted.
Cops said Richards was uncooperative, reeked of alcohol and slurred her speech. Kim was taken to a local jail, where she kicked a police officer. Kim was cited and later released. Richards was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and public intoxication.
Kim admitted on season five of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” that she has been under a lot of stress, as she has been caring for her dying ex-husband, Monty Brinson, who has cancer.
Friends say Richards is also depressed because she’s broke, gets no money for child support, and is in the middle of planning her daughter Brooke’s wedding.
Richards’ alcoholism has been a recurring story line on the “RHOBH” for the past four seasons after her bizarre antics forced sister Kyle Richards to send her packing to rehab for substance abuse treatment.
This past season, Kim repeatedly clashed with co-stars Lisa Rinna, Eileen Davidson and her sister Kyle Richards after the women questioned her sobriety. Kim vehemently insisted she was completely sober — until her April 16 arrest.
